Hello. I am new to the list and thought I would see if there is anyone else
in the group interested in Texas Whitneys. My great great grandfather, Mac
(or Mcclaine) Whitney was the fourth of five Whitney sons born in Lamar and
Red River Counties in Texas between 1885 and 1899. Their parents were Bill
and Virginia Whitney (listed E.W. Whitney and Jennie Raines on their 1885
marriage application). Bill died in 1899 in New Boston and Jennie died in
1901 leaving the boys orphaned. (They were sent to Buckner Boys Home in
Dallas, Texas a month after their mother died.) We have oral family history
that says that either the Raines or the Whitney branch is of Cherokee
descent, but have not found any evidence to determine which one as of yet.
Both adults died before the Miller Rolls were done and only adults were able
to fill them out. Does anyone know if there were Cherokee Whitneys? Raines
sounds much more like an Indian name to me, but I also have read that white
man assigned names to some of the Cherokees, so I guess this is an option,
too. I would love to hear from anyone who is a descendant of this line or
researching similar information.

Thanks,
Melissa Bowyer
