Hi,

Thank you, very interesting stuff. Was "Jock" Whitney's grandfather ("Will
Whitney") William Collins Whitney? If so, did one of Wm Collins Whitney's
sons marry a daughter of John Hay? I know one son (Payne, I believe) married
Gertrude Vanderbilt, and that his daughter, Dorothy, married Willard
Straight, and also that the family had a difficult break up following Flora
Payne Whitney's death and/or Whitney's remarriage, with the sons siding more
with their maternal grandfather's side, the Paynes.

A Chicago Tribune obituary notice of Swansberg's death (author of "Whitney
Father, Whitney Heiress") erroneously stated the biography of William C. &
Dorothy was a biography of John Hay Whitney; they subsequently ran a
correction, but did not include any information about the relationship(s).
The book itself disclosed William C.'s father was Joseph Scully Whitney, and
that his ancestral line was from Nathaniel, but the primary concentration was
on William & Flora, their political and social involvements, the era, and
Dorothy with other relationships treated somewhat peripherally.

Again, thanks.

Merry
