Hello Ken - Having seen your request for "Proof" of the parents of Nathan
Whitney I can offer some information I have on that family. It won't be
Proof but from it the woman that contacted you might be able to pick up a
clue for further searching.
I began a Whitney data base for my own searching back when I was using an
Apple II with but 10 MB of storage space and so my data base was made up of
the bare essentials, part of which was lack of documentation, which I of
course now consider to be essential! Having said that here is what I have on
that family:
I find Nathan on the 1830 census of Grandview Twp., Washington Co., Ohio,
page 370 with a count of 2 0-5, 2 5-10, 1 20-30 / 1 30-40.
Same place on 28 Oct., 1836, a deed for land bought at the Marietta Land
Office, a resident of Washington Co., Ohio, S10, T2, R5. He also owned land
in adjoining Monroe Co.
I have two death dates for him. From notes that go with the information of
his death on 11 June, 1852 in Grandview Twp., Washington Co., Ohio I have
that he was born 10 Sep., 1769 at Gorham, Cumberland Co., ME. That he was
the son of David and Rebecca (Robinson) Edgecomb Whitney. He was "of"
Lisbon, Androscogin and Litchfield, Kennebec counties, ME. Was a War of 1812
veteran from Litchfield, ME. He removed to VA about 1816 and owned land in
Proctor, Marshall Co., VA (now W. VA) in 1835.
He was married to Eunice Cottle, daughter of Isaac & Rhoda (Manchester)
Cottle to whom he announced intentions on 3 March, 1796 at Hallowell,
Kennebec Co., ME. She was born 10 Oct., 1778 at Martha's Vineyard, Dukes
Co., MA and died 26 Aug., 1870 at Proctor, Wetzel Co., WV. She is buried in
the Olivet Cem. at Proctor.
The second date I have of his death is 14 June, 1852, at the home of his
son, Apollis, in Marietta, Ohio. He is buried in Hill's Cemetery, a few
miles east of Marietta. He evidently was a minister as I have seen him
referred to as Reverend.
Their children were Nathan, Apollis (Appolos), John Charles who married
Catherine Gavin, the Reverend Sampson who married Jane Long, Dennis, Rhoda,
Thankful, William L. who married Margaret Boyles, Heyman, Eunice, and
Comfort.
As far as I know I'm not related to this family ... I'm still looking for my
g-g-grandfather, the father of Milton Whitney, born about 1818.
Hope this helps even though it is not the proof you wanted.
Ben
