WRG,

I an seeking help in the resolution to a conflict between two authors who claim different parents for the same person. The person is Daniel Whitney, born 22 January 1793 in Limington, Maine. The Centennial History of Harrison, Maine was compiled and published in 1909 by Moulton, Sampson, and Fernald. Found on page 703 is Daniel, born in Limington as described above, the son of Enoch and Hannah (Newcomb) Whitney. Enoch's ancestry is John1, Benjamin2, Nathaniel3, Nathaniel4, Moses5, Enoch6.

The publication "Early Settlers of Standish, Maine" by Albert J. Sears, found at the DAR Library in Washington, D.C., presents the same Daniel with the same birth information. The difference is that Mr. Sears claims that this Daniel is the son of William and Hannah (Bangs) Whitney of Standish. William's ancestry is John1, Richard2, Moses3, John4, Abner5, William6. It is claimed that William was living in Limington at the time of their marriage, and they are recorded as living there in 1793. They moved to Standish by 1796.

My friend Larry Tracy has graciously volunteered to check a couple of sources he has, for which I thank him. I am hoping that another Maine researcher in the group may have knowledge of Limington records, or have some information which could help to clear up this conflict.
