Hello Ken and WRG,

The following is what I have found from my records: In the "Vital Records
of Limington, Maine" reproduced by our genealogical group "Ancient Landmarks
Society of Parsonsfield 1991" I can verify the marriage intentions
of
William Whitney of Limington and Hannah Bangs of Gorham, August 26, 1792.
However, there are no births recorded for William and Hannah.

A discrepancy seems to appear in Sears' book "Early Families of Standish,
Maine". Referring to William and Hannah's children in the 1800 census, he
relates "a family consisting of him and his wife, and one son and two
daughters all under ten years of age". He further states Daniel was born
January 22, 1793, William Jr. was born January 3, 1795, Mary was born April
27, 1798, and Sarah H. was born about 1800. The other children are not
mentioned here. If we are to read this in light of the census, we find one
male child absent from the analysis. We do know for a matter of fact that
William Jr. later married Anna Hancock in 1818. My records here can't
substantiate a birth of Daniel or an early death before 1800. Perhaps
further research at Maine Historical can enlighten us more as to the
existence of a Daniel in this family.

I think you'll find the following a most interesting extract from the
personal recollections and genealogy of Fairfield Whitney, son of Edward K.
Whitney of Harrison, and grandson of Freeman Whitney, of which I have a
copy. Fairfield Whitney was born in Harrison, Maine on February 20, 1862
and had personal knowledge of Daniel Whitney and other members of his
family. He writes:

"VI. Enoch Whitney
Born - Gorham, Maine in 1773.
Married - (1) Hannah Newcomb of Buxton, mother of his eight children.
(2) Mrs. Kendall, mother of "Ned Kendall, celebrated bugler who "played
before the Queen."
(3) Mrs. Dennet of Brownfield.
Died - Brownfield, May 1857.

Enoch seems to have lived in Gorham, Limington, Standish, Buxton,
Harrison and Brownfield. He settled on the Joseph Phinney Farm in 1810.

Enoch and Hannah had eight children:
1. Daniel
Born - Limington January 22, 1793.
Married - Susan, daughter of Naphtali Harmon, 2nd
of Harrison.
She was born August 31, 1792.

It was Uncle Daniel who walked from Harrison to New Bedford and back
about 1809 to collect his brother's share of the take of the whaling vessel
from which he had been lost.

All my time he lived at the four corners [a niece of Fairfield Whitney,
Miriam (Sylvester) Monroe, has made notations at this point as follows:
"Robbie Perkins' place? opposite Harrison pound - or old Freeman Whitney
place more likely"] just below the homes of Heber Kimball, Lincoln Walker
and Hawthorn Dawes. Perhaps the above would be more accurate.

He and Aunt Susan often called and they were intimate at Uncle Stephens.
She kept for years mother's copy of the Life of David Marks, the preacher.

Grandfather [Freeman]* Whitney and Daniel [brothers]* died the same day
and were buried with a common funeral service. The snow was so deep March
24, 1873, that it was considered impracticable to cut more than a narrow
path into the cemetery [Harrison Village]* . Leave was taken at the gate.

Though Ed was six years old when Enoch died I [Fairfield]* do not
remember ever hearing much about him. I think I was nearly thirty years old
before I ever went to Brownfield. The only distinct recollection I have of
any attempt on father's [Edw.K]* part to revive the early associations was
when he and Uncle Stephen drove over and spent the day in a vain attempt to
locate the site of the old home."

At this point in Fairfield Whitney's family recollections paper, he lists
the other seven children of Enoch and Hannah (Newcomb) Whitney. Following
Daniel are:
Mary, Freeman, Eunice, Eleazer, William, John and Eli.

This paper seems to substantiate Daniel's connection as a child of Enoch and
Hannah (Newcomb) Whitney. At some time in the future when time permits, I
hope to transcribe Fairfield Whitney's genealogy and personal recollections
for the WRG.

* Identifies further notations by Mary T. Carlson of the Harrison Historical
Society.

Larry Tracy, Jr.

> WRG,

> I an seeking help in the resolution to a conflict between two authors
who claim different parents for the same person. The person is Daniel
Whitney, born 22 January 1793 in Limington, Maine. The Centennial History of
Harrison, Maine was compiled and published in 1909 by Moulton, Sampson, and
Fernald. Found on page 703 is Daniel, born in Limington as described above,
the son of Enoch and Hannah (Newcomb) Whitney. Enoch's ancestry is John1,
Benjamin2, Nathaniel3, Nathaniel4, Moses5, Enoch6.
>
> The publication "Early Settlers of Standish, Maine" by Albert J.
Sears, found at the DAR Library in Washington, D.C., presents the same
Daniel with the same birth information. The difference is that Mr. Sears
claims that this Daniel is the son of William and Hannah (Bangs) Whitney of
Standish. William's ancestry is John1, Richard2, Moses3, John4, Abner5,
William6. It is claimed that William was living in Limington at the time of
their marriage, and they are recorded as living there in 1793. They moved to
Standish by 1796.

sources he has, for which I thank him. I am hoping that another Maine
researcher in the group may have knowledge of Limington records, or have
some information which could help to clear up this conflict.
