Dear Michael:
This is going to be a most useful resource for the WRG! So much of our data
from the transcriptions of the Vital Records ends around 1850 that having a
resource that would be nationwide for the succeeding thirty years will be
wonderful.
As to your questions about which format would be more useful, may I seriously
ask if "All of the above" is a possibility? I can think of a number of
circumstances where a search of the entire list (perhaps divided up by the
first letter of the given name to speed the search) would allow one to search
for people that have disappeared off the known map. Conversely, knowing
which Whitneys were contiguous in nearby communities in the same state would
also be quite useful. I can also see how the ability to look for a Whitney
known to have been born in a particular state would help in following the
migration of families westward (and southward, too).
I guess in summary, what Tim and Robert believe to be "doable" on the server,
given the capacities of the search engine that would be associated with this
database and the search engine that Tim has working for the website as a
whole would be the best way to go.
Thank you for a wonderful gift to all of us.
