Hi Ken and List:
My hubby does have a Whitney ancestor from Moose River
Maine.....Silas Whitney, son of Josiah and Elizabeth Harding.
Silas was the only child of Josiah's that did not join the
Shakers .....Silas married Elvira Lane...they had dau
Nancy Bradbury Lane Whitney
My hubby's great aunt sent us a letter few years back that
I have just "dug out".....and she mentions what she recalls
of the Whitneys OTHER THAN Nancy.:
* Eben Whitney of Lewiston who was brother to Nancy[Whitney] Redmond
[Peter of Solon,Me]
* twins: George and Clifton....dont know what happened to george
but Clifton lived in Lewiston,Maine and had a hardware store. Clifton'
married a Bessie Folsom and had 1 child --Dorothy.
I have a correspondence from the town clerk of Gorham
[email]
** Feb.14,1999: " Josiah married both, Hannah Barstow
first and then on Sept.16,1775, he married Elizabeth Harding.
Josiah joined the shakers and moved to Alfred with them where
he died Feb. 24,1837". [doesnt say where she got the info]
**April 24,1999: " I could not find much on Josiah and his 2 wives
than what you already have but here is what I did find:
- -I couldnt find nothing on Hannah Barstow.
- - Elizabeth Harding was born 1751 in Gorham, dau of Seth
and Elizabeth (Wilkit) Harding. She died in Alfred,Me at the
Shaker Village on April 26,1841.
- - Josiah was born 1752, son of Nathaniel Whitney(of Biddeford) and
Hannah Day (of Wells).
