How to configure Norton AntiVirus 2002 to provide maximum virus protection

Situation:
You want to know how to configure Norton AntiVirus 2002 (NAV) to provide the
highest level of virus protection.

Solution:
The settings in the following NAV modules can affect the level of virus
protection that NAV provides:
Virus definitions
Auto-Protect
Script Blocking
Email Protection
Manual Scans
Scheduled Scans

Follow the instructions in the order shown to make sure that all of these
modules are optimally configured to provide the highest level of virus
protection.

Virus definitions
Run LiveUpdate to make sure that you have the most recent virus definition
and program updates. At this time, virus definitions are usually updated
weekly. For information on how to run LiveUpdate, see the document How to
run LiveUpdate.

You can also configure NAV to automatically download virus definitions when
you are connected to the Internet.

To enable Automatic LiveUpdate:
1. Start NAV, and then click Options.
2. Click LiveUpdate in the Internet section.
3. Check "Enable Automatic LiveUpdate (recommended)."
4. Click "Apply updates automatically without interrupting me
(recommended)."

Script Blocking
Script Blocking technology will help protect your computer from script based
viruses even before virus definitions are available.

To enable Script Blocking:
1. Click Script Blocking in the System section.
2. In the "How to stay protected from malicious scripts" section, check
"Enable Script Blocking (recommended)."
3. In the "How to respond when a malicious script is found" section, click
"Ask me what to do (recommended)."

Auto-Protect
Auto-Protect is designed to scan for viruses when files are opened, moved,
created, or downloaded.

To configure Auto-Protect for maximum protection:
1. Click Auto-Protect in the System section.
2. In the "How to stay protected" section, check "Enable Auto-Protect
(recommended), and "Start Auto-Protect when Windows starts up
(recommended)."
3. In the "Which file types to scan for viruses" section, check
"Comprehensive file scanning (recommended)."
4. Click Advanced in the System section.
5. In the "What activities to monitor when using floppy disks" section,
check "Scan floppy disk for boot viruses every time it is mounted" and "Scan
floppy disk in A: for boot viruses when shutting down." If your computer has
two floppy disk drives, then check "Scan all additional floppies on
shutdown."

Email Protection
Email Protection is designed to scan incoming and outgoing email for
viruses.

To configure Email Protection for maximum protection:
1. Click Email in the System section.
2. In the "What to scan" section, check "Scan incoming Email (recommended),"
and "Scan outgoing Email (recommended)."
3. In the "What to do when scanning Email" section, check "Protect against
timeouts when scanning email (recommended)."

Manual Scans
Manual virus scans are designed to scan the hard drive for viruses.

To configure manual virus scans for maximum protection:
1. Click Manual Scan in the System section.
2. In the "What items to scan in addition to files," section:
Windows 98/Me: Check Memory, Boot records, and Master boot records.
Windows NT/2000/XP: Check Boot records and Master boot records.
3. In the "Which file types to scan for viruses" section, click
"Comprehensive file scanning (recommended)," and then check "Scan within
compressed files."
4. Click Bloodhound in the System section.
5. Check "Enable Bloodhound heuristics (recommended)."
6. Click "Highest level of protection."

NOTE: Selecting "Highest Level of Protection" may cause NAV to incorrectly
report a virus. Symantec suggests that you use this setting only if you
highly suspect that you have a virus. In all other cases, select the middle
setting "Default level of protection (recommended)." If NAV detects a virus
only when heuristics is set at "Highest Level of Protection," then we
suggest that you use Scan and Deliver to submit a virus sample to the
Symantec AntiVirus Research Center. For instructions on using Scan and
Deliver, see the document How to submit a file to Symantec Security Response
using Scan and Deliver.

7. Click OK.

Scheduled Scans
Scheduled scans are designed to scan the hard drive for viruses at a
predetermined time. Scheduled scans are a good way to make sure your
computer is scanned regularly for viruses.

NOTE: The computer must be turned on at the scheduled time for a scheduled
scan to occur.

To configure a scheduled scan for maximum protection:
1. Start NAV, and then click "Scan for Viruses."
2. Click "Scan my computer".
3. In the "Schedule Task" section near the bottom of the NAV display screen,
click Schedule.
4. Click the New button.
5. Under the "Schedule Task" section, choose how often you want to scan for
viruses, such as Daily or Weekly.
6. Under the "Start time" section, enter a time for the virus scan. If you
schedule a weekly scan, then also select a day of the week.
7. Click OK.
