Hello WRG,
Yesterday I had the opportunity to review the Civil War pension file of Benjamin F. Whitney. He was the son of Eliab T. and Lydia Whitney of Edgecomb, Lincoln Co., Maine. Benjamin died at Annapolis, MD 2 December 1864 of starvation, after being a prisoner of war. He served in Co. F, 28th Maine Volunteers. A claim was made on his pension by his widowed mother, Lydia. She was then a resident of Sherman Mills, Aroostook Co, Maine. Her application contains much genealogical information, including a list prepared by her of her children, as copied below:
December 15, 1868, Children are:
Nancy, age 43, resides in Bath, ME
Sarah J., age 41, resides in Bristol, ME
Emeline, age 38, resides in Sherman, ME
William, age 36, resides in Edgecomb, ME
David, age 34, is a sailor
Alpheus, age 31, resides in Bath, ME
Alouis (?), age 31, resides in Northport, Mass.
Benjamin, the deceased soldier, 22 past at death
Hannah, age 26, resides Sherman, ME
Alonzo, age 24 years, among relatives
Georgianna, age 20, resides Lawrence, MA
Lydia testifies that all of her daughters are married except Georgianna, who is employed in Lawrence, MA. Some of the sons are also married.
I hope this information is helpful to someone. If it is, please contact me at (), because you may in turn be very helpful to me. Eliab T. Whitney was the son of the elusive Josiah Whitney, who I believe, but cannot prove, was the son of Dr. John Whitney of Eastham, MA and York, ME. All clues, large or small, are welcome.
Ken Whitney, Silver Spring, MD
