Hi Reunion Participants:
I spoke with a lovely woman at the Watertown Public Library this
morning. She told me of quite a few things they have, including copies
of Henry Bond's 1850ish map of Watertown, copies of the Pierce and
Melville books, a book call "Crossroads on the Charles" from which she
read me some excepts on the Whitneys of Watertown and a new book,
"Divided We Stand" - also history of Watertown book. They have numerous
series with early photographs of WAtertown, including "The Elms,"
apparently quite a mansion in which Minnitte Osgood Whitney & Husband
had their 20th wedding anniversary (and she received 300 diamonds as a
present!!). She has the address of Lexington Street for John & Elinor
which is not where the high school is and I believe Shawn had said that
the high school was on their land. I could have gotten this mistaken.
Anyway, she offered to have a room for us downstairs with all the
Whitney resources brought down, etc., but then remembered that the
library has lost its' funding to stay open on weekends during the
summer. Therefore, if we want to access this resource, we will have to
chalk over some change for the Janitor, etc. I have the number to call
to get more information on costs, etc. for this. Is this something we
want to pursue? If people are not interested, I don't want to spend a
lot of time making phone calls, so let me know if you'd be interested in
spending a little money for this.
Thanks,
LYN
