Hello Lois,
John A. Whitney testified that his brother Mendal died at
Andersonville prison during the Civil War. There is a record of a Mendall
Whitney dying there in 1864. Therefore, he could not be your Mental. Are you
saying that John A. had a son that he named after his brother, and this is
your ancestor? If that is true, then it is not born out in his pension file,
but that may be the case if he was asked for only children under 16 years of
age. I will have to check the file again. Im sorry I could not spend much
time on it the first time I read it. Also, the copiers may be more
accessible when I read it again. Meanwhile, it looks like a lot of areas for
research have opened up in researching John A. Whitney. Ill let you know
when I can return to the Archives. Good luck.
Ken Whitney

Ken, I believe that John A was right. He had a son named Mental adn
another named Bernice and also one daughter named May. My grandfather
Mental was born in 1863 . Bernice in 1865-66, Mentle was born in Ny.
and believe Bernice was also.. Unfortunately most of my info is in Fla. and
I am in Mi. Becky Myers has info handy I believe when she gets back from
Alalska. Mentle died in Port Angeles Wa. in 1941. He also lost
contact with his sons when he went to Wa. in 1914-18. However they are
listed in his obituary in Wash. I do think we are on the right track but
just have to pull some more together. My father Berniece (changed to James
B.) and called Bert by brothers was the oldest of Mental B. 10-17-1885.
Hope this clarifys things a little.
