Hi Karen - I might be able to help you with your ancestors of your
James Davis Whitney if you don't have information by this time.
From my notes I have the following:
There are ancestor charts of members of the Ohio Genealogical Society
that list him.
He was born 22 June, 1814, probably Wilton (I also have Norwalk), CT.
He was the son of Henry and Lucy (Grumman) Whitney who are found in
the work by Phoenix, #2101.
Henry and Lucy were at one time, residents of Shelby, Sharon Twp.,
Richland Co., Ohio in 1819. I have quite a bit of information of their
family and his land dealings.
James married Hannah Pugh 5 April of 1834 in Licking Co., Ohio. Hannah
was born 6 Nov., 1818, a daughter of Abram & Sarah (Asbury) Pugh of
VA. I also have a note that says the father was an Annaniah.
In 1834 James and Hannah were residents of Kirkersville, Harrison
Twp., Licking Co., OH. They were residents there for seven years and
then went to Bloomfield Twp., Logan Co., OH.
There are a number of deed transactions there and involved in one was
a Isaac Whitney who paid for a lot. Books FF-226, FF-227, FF-336,
LL-448.
On 5 Nov., 1838 James and Hannah made a deed to David Gilmore, Emitt
and Julian Heddan. Pugh's mentioned were Ananiah & Laura, William &
Lidia, James & Farrah, Mary, Jonathan. Also mentioned were Martha
Graves, John & Elizabeth Askins, Van & Lucinda Browning.
James and Hannah are in the 1840 census of Harrison Twp., Licking Co.,
OH.
In the 1850 Logan Co., OH census, which I feel certain you have found,
I find one of his children was a Henry and I have a note that he was
born 9 Apr., 1840 in OH, and died 17 Sep., 1906, Lima, Allen Co., OH.
These People are not mine as far as I can ascertain, I just have the
notes from my search for my Milton's parents in Licking Co. of the
same time period.
Good luck,
Ben
