Dear Allan & WRG:
Unfortunately, the Hapgood Genealogy, like most of those old genealogy, gives no source citations. It also rarely states where an event took place. I'm sorry I can't, at this time, shed any light on the Jonathan Whitney / Sarah Hapgood marriage.
I realize that these genealogies are full of errors & are lacking in citations, but as you noted, the odd bits of information contained in these books are priceless. You can also find dates of births, marriages & deaths in them that are beyond what you find in the published Massachusetts records, which generally end at 1850. These more recent dates seem to be quite accurate.
Another bonus: through the Hartwell genealogy (publ. in 1959), I obtained names of distant cousins who might be still alive. I located one, my 2nd cousin once removed, & she had pictures of my grt grt grandparents, as well as of numerous other relatives. We have met & shared lots of information. I wouldn't have known about her if it wasn't for the published genealogy.
Laura
