Subject: [WHITNEY-L] Error in Phoenix - Lines should be Sines
Date: Sat, 8 Feb 2003 08:31:24 -0500

Dear WRG: Elaine Decker <> and I have been corresponding recently concerning entries in the Henry Whitney database posted on-line.

This concerns descendants of Joseph and Elizabeth (Whitney) Keeler. She was Elizabeth-3 (John-2, Henry-1).

It appears that Phoenix (or his typist/transcriber) made a mistake beginning in Vol 1, p241 with the marriage of Priscilla BANGS and her marriage to Philip SINES, whose surname Phoenix incorrectly spells Lines.

In old handwriting, the letter S and the letter L can easily be confused.

Elaine is a descendant of Philip and Priscilla (BANGS) SINES through their daughter Ellen (whose correct name is Eleanor) who married Ephraim DECKER.

Below are the key portions of our email messages. I will be making corrections in the "official" database per Elaine's information.

>From Elaine on 29 Jan 2003:
My g.g.grandfather is listed in your data base @ www.my-gen.com at
http://www.my-ged.com/db/page/whitney2/7543. You have him married to Ellen
LINES. Her name was Eleanor SINES. She died in 1865 in Laurens, Otsego
County, NY of consumption (TB).

In a message dated 1/29/03 6:23:11 AM Eastern Standard Time,
writes:

<< Ellen Lines, b. at Charleston, now Lima, N.Y., 8 May 1806; married Ephraim
Decker; died at Ostego, N.Y., 20 Jan 1861; and was buried there.<<

The children for Ephraim and Ellen (Lines) Decker are given in Vol. 2, p1438 WITHOUT DATES as follows:
Lovina
Sarah
Lucretia
Philip
David
Mary
Rhoda
Julia

Does this still seem like the right family? >>

Jeanne,
It sure does. Only it was SINES not LINES. Ellen's given name was Eleanor
and she died in 1865 from consumption, not 1861. I have been to Laurens and
looked at the old death records.

Thank you so much for getting back to me on this. Ephraim is still hiding on
me but the rest of the information is really appreciated. I wish I could
find the graves but I do know they were very poor so there probably were no
stones.

I have a GAR picture of Philip DECKER taken in the late 1800s if you are
interested I will email it to you. He was born in 1840 and died in 10/20/1897
in New Berlin, Chenango County, NY. I visited his Civil War grave there. I
also have his Civil War packet from NARA.

You did give me information that I did not have and that is the parents of
Philip SINES. I am very thankful for this information. I have been searching
for his parents for years.

If you want any more information on this family I will gladly share all I
have. I have an old genealogy on the descendants of the Philip SINES family
done in 1933. I will gladly snail mail you a copy if you would like. It is
two pages on 11 X 14 paper.

Thanks a million.
Elaine Decker
