Dear Mert:
I think you misread my previous letter. Elizabeth Rand was not the wife of
Thomas Whitney. She was the wife of Phineas Whitney of Westminster,
Worcester, MA, married 13 Jan 1788 in Westminster, Worcester, MA,
(Westminster Vital Records, pp. 178 for Rand and 202 for Whitney),
>!MARRIAGE: Certificate of Marriage for Phinehas (sic) Whitney and Elizabeth
>Rand; 1738-1845; BIRTHS, DEATHS & MARRIAGES; Westminster, Worcester >Co.,
MA; p. 314; Clerk of the Town of Westminster, MA.
[my citations are from the published series of Vital Records to 1850, while
the one copied above was provided by the court clerk and its page numbers
refer to a different book]
and thus Elizabeth Rand was the mother of the Thomas Whitney who was born in
Westminster, Worcester, MA, on 18 Mar 1795 (Westminster Vital Records, p.
100). It was this Thomas Whitney who removed first to Washington County, OH,
and later to Delaware County, IN. In my previous letter I cited his marriages
to first Artimacy Preston and secondly to Hannah Preston.
You cite Boylston Whitney as if he were a son of Thomas Whitney. The records
submitted to the WRG (which I did not do) database shows him to be the son
(second child) of Thomas' brother, John Whitney and his wife Sarah Chapman,
who were married 1 Mar 1821, also in Washington County, OH. This same record
shows Boylston S. Whitney as born in 1836, which sounds like it was derived
from a census record. There is only some documentation or sourcing on this
data. Here's what appears in the notes for John Whitney.
!CENSUS: 1827 Waterford Twp, Washington Co., OH--people listed are John
!CENSUS: 1831 Waterford Twp, Washington Co., OH--People listed John Whitney
and Thomas Whitney
!CENSUS: 1839 Waterford Twp, Washington Co., OH--People listed John Whitney
!BIRTH: Frederick Clifton Pierce, WHITNEY THE DESCENDANTS OF JOHN WHITNEY WHO
CAME FROM LONDON, ENGLAND, TO WATERTOWN, MA, IN 1635;; Press of W. B. Conkey
Company, Chicago, IL, 1895; p. 148; Sons of the Revolution Library and
Society, Glendale, CA.
[Note from AEG: The Indiana Census shows that Nancy Whitney, daughter of
Thomas and Hannah Preston Whitney was born in 1833 in Indiana, thus the
family must have moved there from Washington County, OH, sometime between the
1831 date shown above and the 1833 birth for Nancy]
The same entries show that John Whitney died 6 Jan 1849 in Washington Co.,
OH, and his widow died 7 Nov 1885 in Morgan Co., OH. If Boylston was left
fatherless at age 13, it would not be surprising that he went to Delaware
County, IN, to live with other family. He is not, of course, in the Thomas
Whitney household in the 1850 Census. I'll try to find the time to use our
subscription to Ancestry.com to check the other Whitney households in the
1850 and see if I can find Boylston.
If this Boylston S. Whitney is the person you are trying to follow, I think
it highly likely that he is the one that is the grandchild of Phineas and
Elizabeth Rand Whitney. I looked at the notes for Phineas Whitney on the WRG
database and they say nothing about his service in the Revolution. You might
check the DAR Patriot Index, and as soon as the WRG website is back on line
and available, there are resources there for seeking information about
Revolutionary War ancestry.
I hope this clears up any confusion you might have. Let me know if I can be
of further help to you.
Sincerely,
Allan E. Green
