Dear Kate and WRG:
Thank you so much for following up on the posting I made about the family of
Thomas Whitney, b. 1795 in Westminster, MA. The listing of all the Whitney
marriages was particularly valuable.
I think I can help clear up a couple of the spelling problems. First, the
age of the first entry that is questionable is just right for Mordedai, who
was born in Dec. of 1829. Secondly, the "fancy" names that some of our 19th
century ancestors stuck their children with often give rise to creative
spelling, especially if they deteriorate within the family into familiar
names. I think that the young woman who is a problem is simply either
Artimesia or Artimisa, with my vote going to the former. The marriage date
of 1857 is right on the money for a woman born in 1836.
Finally, I do think that the Census taker really meant to spell Farmer rather
than Framer. Being a framer is a fine occupation, but I doubt that there
would be enough of that kind of work for Thomas and Mordecai and Phineas to
constitute a full time or near full time occupation.
Again, thank you for all the good help. I'll be saving the marriages for
later use.
