Dear Jinny:

The things you won't get from the WRG is condescension or techno-babble. I
have never heard of an on-line group with kinder and more helpful people on it.
If you have asked a question and not gotten a response, my best guess is
that no one had the answer you needed, at least ready in their mind.

Please pick a question that is puzzling you, phrase it in a way that shows
what you DO know, and provide enough detailed information about things like
places, and dates (approximate if you don't know them) so as to allow someone to
sort out one "Thomas" Whitney from among the several dozen available.

At the last (first) Reunion, one spoke on the origin and history of the WRG,
another on some helpful ideas and techniques for working on-line, another on
the purported English origins, another on finding answers to the mystery of
some Maine Whitneys, etc., etc. Many of these sets of remarks have been posted
on the WRG website at whitneygen.org, if you would like to take a look at them
to see what they were like.

I would guess that the sessions in DC might well focus on the different
places that information can be sought (and found) and which places would be the
best to use for which kinds of problems or searches. The three local organizers
are all well versed in research at the various venues in the area, and can
save us countless hours of fruitless effort by pointing us toward the best
places.

Next, the opportunity to socialize and share research stories and put faces
and voices to the names we see regularly via the WRG maillist is really fun.
As to the matter of comfort -- I'm one who has to be a bit careful, as I tote
oxygen around with me, and am somewhat limited in what I can go and do. That
said, I'll be there with bells on.

Finally, if you are planning to go by car, don't forget the invitation from
me (and my Ginny) to a Crab Feast over on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, about
2-1/2 hours from DC, at the end of the Reunion 2004.

Hope to get to know you on-line and in person.

Allan E. Green
