For a full discussion of this disproof, see

The parts of Melville's book which pertain to John-1 WHITNEY of Watertown, MA,
and his father Thomas WHITNEY of Westminster, England, have been
transcribed and
are available on-line at
<http://www.whitneygen.org/archives/extracts/melville/index.html>
If you still want to buy copies of the books, you can get both from the
Higginson Book Company, <http://www.higginsonbooks.com>, in photoduplicated
editions. These can be a bit pricey, however!
