Hi Allan,
I received the data from Sharan E. Newman:
(Sharan E. Newman)
Her letter explains your question:
Subj: [WHITNEY-L] Benjamin and Abigail Whitney

I would be happy to add my Whitneys to the data base as soon as I can
figure out how to put in the information about generations down. My
Whitney's are descended from John and Eleanor but through Benjamin Hoar
and Abigail Whitney. After the Revolution they moved from Littleton
Mass to Albany where, according to family legend, the Hoar daughters
were unmercifully teased. Therefore Benjamin took the family to the
local courthouse and had all of their names legally changed to Whitney.
I have the record of this. Anyone who may have come to a dead end with
Benjamin will now know why.
I'll post the whole family if someone will be kind enough to guide me
through it.
Sharan Newman
