WRG,

The following is targeted not so much for the discovery of a John Whitney, but instead for the nomenclature used in the Canadian Census material that may offer some confusion. Please note that this John Whitney has not been further researched.

While researching Canadian Whitneys, I encountered a John Whitney (born circa 1786)in the Sheffield, New Brunswick census of 1851. his entry in the "Race" (or origin) Column stated "Lower Canada". The "Birth" column uses the word "Canada". If one was born in NB, that column would have "NB" entered. Distilling this information, it would appear that this John Whitney was born in Quebec, since Quebec in 1851 was called "Lower Canada."
