Brenda -
Since you are a Henry descendant, you might not want to spend your time
looking for records on John.
As a John (1) descendant, however, if I had the time in London, I would go
to the Westminster School (where Pierce says John (1) was educated) and
ask whether they have any records of his attendance there (probably
somewhere between 1599-1607 - when he was apprenticed to William Pring).
The Westminster School is located south of Westminster Abbey.
The other place that would probably be worth investigating is the parish
church of St. Mary Aldermary, which was John (1)'s parish, to see what
parish records exist that relate to him. Problem is that St. Mary
Aldermary burned in the London fire of 1666, so all earlier records might
have been lost. The current structure was designed and built by Sir
Christopher Wren, who did the same for St. Paul's cathedral as well as Bow
Church. However, the fire was slow moving and some or all of the records
may have been saved. In any case, Pierce says, "Entries in the registers
of the parish of St. Mary Aldermary indicate that he lived there -in 'Bowe
lanne,' near Bow churchfor several years." That church is at the corner
of Bow Lane and Cannon Street, while Bow Church is just two blocks north
at the corner of Bow Lane and Cheapside (I can't explain why they
represent two different parishes). (I have pictures of St. Mary
Aldermary)
By the way, Bow Church is famous because it is said that all Cockneys were
born within hearing of the bells of Bow Church.
