Hello John-Mark,

I have some good news, some better news, and some great news. First, you
are not only related to the Whitneys through two ancestors, but three. The
better news is that I can connect all three back to 1635, when John and
Eleanor Whitney came to Watertown, MA from London, England. The great news
is that I saved a lot of money by switching my car insurance to GEICO, but
that's another story! (Humor! You don't find that a lot in genealogy
circles.)

The 1880 census of Jonesboro, ME reveals Ewin Varney, age 27,
blacksmith, born Maine. With him is his wife Elvira, age 32, born Maine,
housekkeeper, and their daughters Inez, 5 years old, and Gertrude, age 1,
both b. Maine. From LDS Roll #1597747, Steuben, Maine Vital Records and
Jonesboro Marriages, the couple was married 7 Aug 1874 in Jonesboro. These
are then the parents of Inez Delia Varney, who married James Beecher Small.

Elvira's ancesrty is: Elvira9, Ruben8, Gustavus Fellows7,Ephraim6,
Joel5, Abel4, Nathaniel3, Benjamin2, John1. She is the daughter of Ruben
Whitney and the widow Lydia Holmes Tabbutt. Does you software accept gedcoms
from Family Treemaker? If it does, I'll try to export to you a gedcom for
this ancestor line, as well as the others. Also, I recommend that you visit
the web site for the Whitney Research Group at www.whitneygen.org. You will
find a lot of info on the early part of the lineage there.

You had me going there for a second with Mayflower Whitney. I had never
heard of her. Then, I remembered a genealogy sent to me of a line of
Whitneys in Jonesboro. The material was sent to me by my cousin Wayne
Whitney, who at that time lived on Beals Island, off Jonesboro. He was my
"boots on the gound" in Jonesboro when I first started studying the Whitneys
from there. Sure enough, there was Mayflower, who married Benjamin Varney.
She is the daughter of two Whitneys. Her father was Josiah Noyes Whitney,
Jr., and her mother was Josephine Leighton Whitney. Their ancestries are as
follows:

Mayflower9, Josiah Noyes, Jr.8, Josiah Noyes7, Ephraim6, Joel5,
Abel4, Nathaniel3, Benjamin2, John1.
Mayflower9, Josephine Leighton8, Charles P.7, Gustavus Fellows6,
Ephraim5, Joel4, Abel3, Nathaniel3, Benjamin2, John1.

As you can see, these Jonesboro apples didn't fall far from the tree! If
you would like to learn more about your early Whitney ancestors, I recomend
you visit my web page at http://kenwhitney.tripod.com/whitneygenealogy . You
will find a lot there on the first four generations by clicking on their
names. I also have a great history involving the fifth generation Joel. He
was highly involved in the first naval battle ever fought and won by this
country. You can find the story by clicking on my ancestor, Micah.

Let me know about the gedcom and I will see what I can do. I hope this
is of some help.

Ken Whitney
