Beth - the tories were loyalists - loyal to King George of Great Britain and
fought the war on the side of Great Britain, often joining up with their
forces. Many of the residents along the North Carolina and South Carolina
border, as well as many of those in Burke Co, NC and in the old Surry/Wilkes
Co area, the mountain region, leaned toward loyalty to Great Britain. There
were also a lot of tories in New York, and they were probably in all the
colonies. When the war was over, many of the tories fled to Canada - Nova
Scotia became the new home for many of them. In Canada, the descendants of
these people are referred to as United Kingdom Loyalists.
When you have time, do go to the NGS library and check on that reference to
Joab Wilder being a Tory. Also, whoever has the reference to Joab being in
a militia group, please post that to the list.
I wish to remind others on this list that I lived most of my life in
Washington Co, TN, and today live 2 miles from the county line. In other
words, I buy all my groceries there. I have checked all the Washington Co
records, as well as deeds, etc.
When Joab Wilder got his "Tennessee" land grant, the territory belonged to
the federal government as the "Territory South of the River Ohio" and the
records from that era are recorded in Washington Co, TN. When Joab sold
this land, Carter Co, TN was just being formed, and the purchaser recorded
his deed in Carter County. In the 1830's, Johnson County, TN was created
from Carter County, and today Johnson County encompasses the territory where
Joab Wilder's land grant was located. The land is very near the North
Carolina border, just where the Watauga River flows into Tennessee from
North Carolina.......at the Stone Mountain which is also near the state
lines. Joab Wilder's land had originally been granted to John Asher, and
was assigned to Joab by John's son, Charles Asher. The Hoskins family were
also neighbors, and Ninian Hoskins is mentioned frequently in Washington Co,
TN court minutes. Later, Ninian Hoskins moved to the Harlan Co, KY area.
It is interesting to speculate how these families could be interrelated.
Did Joab Wilder have daughters who could have married into these families?
Something to think about.
This has not been my week for computers. Earlier in the week my keyboard
threw up its hands and refused to type one letter. I finally had to attach
the keyboard from my other computer to this one. Then, last night, just as
we were falling asleep, a giant bolt of lightening struck the transmitter on
the power line coming into our house. At that moment I thought - there goes
my modem! Sure enough, when I came down to check the email this morning,
the modem was sure enough "fried." So, I have spent all day fooling with
the thing, but did get a new one installed today - thank goodness. So, if
nothing I wrote, above, makes sense, please ask me to re-state it.
