Subject: Non-Recipt of List Posts & Subbing-Unsubbing

Rick Wilhite just reminded me of some reasons that users of these
Lists may not be seeing posts, and there is no apparent reason for
not receiving them.

Firstly, CHECK THE SETTINGS AT YOUR SERVICE PROVIDER, especially
AOL. If you don't keep a close watch on the ISP's, they will change
things with software which either shunt your received email off to a
SPAM/Reject folder, or just simply refuse to accept the
emails. Check those SPAM/Reject folders (online at the ISP's
website) and see if you find "good" emails there. Then check your
settings.

Secondly, lately many ISP's have begun using an Anti-SPAM service
called "SpamCop". The insane default settings for that service
automatically assume that emails that are addressed to many
recipients MUST be SPAM, and, therefore, refuse to accept the
email. They won't even accept your emails and place them in a
SPAM/Reject folder. They just refuse them.

Thirdly, CHECK "YOUR" SETTINGS, if you're using any kind of Anti-SPAM
utility, or any kind of Anti-Ad utility. Check your own email
browser to see if you have IT set to shunt off suspected SPAM to a
Junk folder. I use Eudora, which does a fantastic job of culling out
SPAM to a Junk folder, but I ALWAYS check that folder to make sure no
"good" emails have ended up there. Eudora very, very rarely puts
good emails in the Junk folder, maybe one out of a thousand or so.

Fourthly, if you don't know, find out what the limit is at your ISP
for storing emails. Some services allow very limited amounts of
email to accumulate. If you don't download often, or if you're on
vacation or otherwise away, your space can fill up quickly. Once
it's full, all subsequent emails are "bounced".

Fifthly, check at your ISP and see what the "size" limit is on emails
you receive. The "D" versions of these Lists (the Digest versions)
send out a collection of posts (rather than send them individually),
and those Digests can be as large as 20 Kb (20,000 bytes). Many
smaller, local, ISP's have limits of 5,000 or 10,000 bytes. Anything
larger is "bounced".

Finally, a note for those who change email addresses or have two or
more such addresses. The email address with which you sign up is the
ONLY address that you can use to send emails to the Lists. If your
address is and you get a new address of
when you change servers, you MUST unsubscribe the old
address BEFORE you switch, then re-subscribe with the new address
after the switch. If this is not possible, most email programs will
let you "spoof " a From: address:

(1) After the switch, use your email program and send something
like the following:
To:

(Chose from the above the one from which you wish to
unsubscribe the OLD address.)
(Make sure you put the "-request" part in the To: header.)

From: (use the OLD address here)

Subject: Unsubscribe
(You don't need to put anything in the body;
make sure there are no tags or signatures in the body.)

(2) Then send another email, exactly as the above, except for
the following:

From: (use the NEW address here)

Subject: Subscribe

(3) If you can't do the above, send an email to ME explaining
the problem and I will unsubscribe the old one, and re-subscribe you
with the new one. (DON'T send it to the List.) Just remember, you
must give me both the OLD ADDRESS and the NEW ADDRESS. I don't have
time to search through seven or eight hundred email address trying to
figure out what your old address was.

You may email me at any of the following email addresses:

(List Name)-, e.g.,
, or

If you have any questions or problems, don't hesitate to email me
privately. I'm more than glad to help.
