To All Monroe and Conecuh County researchers.....

"Monroe County was created by the Mississippi Territory governor, David Holmes, on
1815
June 29. It comprised all the Creek Indian lands ceded by the Treaty of Fort Jackson.
It was reduced in size by the creation of the Alabama counties of Montgomery,
Conecuh and Wilcox. It was named for Pres. James Monroe."

Timeline of the area counties in Alabama:
Creation of Washington County in 1800, from Mississippi Territory and Baldwin
County
Creation of Monroe County in 1815 from Creek Cession of 1814 and Mississippi
Territory
Creation of Montgomery County in 1816 from Monroe County
Creation of Butler County in 1818, from Monroe County
Creation of Conecuh County in 1818, from Monroe County
Creation of Wilcox County in 1819, from Monroe and Dallas County
Creation of Henry County in 1819, from Conecuh County
I feel certain that you know most of the above facts.... but this gives even
additional weight to my
'theory' of Wm Witherington's service with the Mississippi Territory Militia
(1813-1815) being in Alabama
against the Creek Indians.
*It was Gov. David Holmes that had signed Wm Witherington, Jr.'s Ensigns Certificate
in July 1813 in Washington, Jackson County, MS (then the capitol of the Miss
Territory).
*William Witherington, Jr and his family (including his father Wm SR.) migrated to
Conecuh County in 1919 from Feliciana Parish, LA.
