Hello Carruthers, W'tons, et al. This is my (Barry) Dragon Dictate speech recognition rough (VERY ROUGH ) notes for my review of some interesting Craven Co NC records, entitled ~ 'Minutes of New Bern courts/ Loose papers, all as selected by others and located/ reviewed by still others, from which I have dictated these notes.

There are many interesting & genealogically important notes here, worthy of review by all interested in these SURNAMES and dates/ activities. My suggestion - if these subjects/ SURNAMES/ dates/ locations are of potential interest to you, skim these notes and select those portions you wish to review further, then select and save those portions to your 'Notes to Review later' Folder, perhaps pulling a few of the more interesting ones to include in your Gen program notes.
These are notes from a packet sent to me by Eugenia, 22 July 2000, which I've entitled Prayerbook etc. (from other info included. This packet of approximately 50 + pages I have reviewed, and intend to transcribe my notes. At some point, these pages will be posted (w/this work) to enable further analysis, perhaps in the Kellenberger Gen Wing in Craven Lib:

There are partially 50 pages here, and, to get to it, I'm going to begin dictating in no apparent order.

From a group of pages entitled New Bern (NC) District loose papers, I'll identify pages and Mina which their own.

November 1752, Craven County, North Carolina court minutes book for page 36. Many of these pages identify John Carruthers, as Esquire and/or Justice, suggesting he was an officer of the court. Page 36 makes a couple of such comments, near the top. Then, we note, a reference to Southie roux southey rew appointed by the court as an inspector. Apparently, roux was appointed perhaps by John Carruthers. Paragraph

in paragraph 126, 8 deed, that sale from John Carruthers for two lots in the town of new Bern, numbered 197 and 198 referenced.

Next to page 34 paragraphs, 117 -- 120 paragraph

this is a quite puzzling page, because it references eight deed of sale from John Carruthers to William Woodcliff dub you I see KLIFFE for two lots on Pollock's street in new Bern, specifically and most importantly, Lott number 98. Lot 98 was the location of Rocksolannah's home for many of the Wetherington events in North Carolina. It was unexpected to find a reference for a sale by John Carruthers of Lot 98. On that same page, there is reference to eight deed of sale from John Carruthers also to William Woodcliff for two lots in new Bern, numbered 195 and 196.

The same page, also references, what Cliff for nine days jurors attendance at the General Court, and John Carruthers for eight days with a? At the same juror of attendance at the court.

Next, we go to page 36, of what appears to be the same court minutes, book 4, this time, page 36. Again we find reference to John Carruthers is a justice, appointment of Southie roux, appointed by the court, presumably including John Carruthers. Further down in paragraphs 124 and 125, John Carruthers enters into a bonded for some type of guardianship. Continued there is reference to John Carruthers in a deed of sale to John T. Oates for two lots in new Bern, numbered 197 and 198 proved in open court, by the oath of Gorton Harrell, and then registered. John Carruthers is further reference to further below in paragraph 127 and 125.

We next go to page 26, dated May of 1752, page 26, which is very important, because it references Jane Carruthers, and John Carruthers Jr. apparently the wife and John Carruthers Jr., son of John Carruthers. John and Jane are signing as evidence for a last will and testament. That was in paragraph 88. There are three more references to John Carruthers, one in which John Carruthers will meet with the court at the adjourned date of May 14, 1752. According to the adjournment.

Skipping from pages 88 and 89 -- 106, 106, we go to page 90 referencing John Carruthers and 11-year-old bull a Ballenger John Carruthers to learn the art of a cooper, and to learn to read and write. Next, John Carruthers's is involved in a matter, shortly after, of which there is a deed of sale from John Rice to Joseph Paul for 640 acres of land and Craven County

next page 22, dated February 1752 court minutes in which apparently John Carruthers, the sun. It is qualified as executor of John Carruthers deceased by taking the oath and references made to Sarah. That's worth. That's worth BETSWORTH and I'll buy a bond ABIAH BOND as witnesses to the notice of letters testamentary. The court then proceeded to two .trial through appoint Charles roux as a constable for the following air. Paragraph 74, John Carruthers Esq. was appointed for the purpose of examination of a deed of sale for new Bern lot 106. And further down in paragraph 7599, the court adjourned and John Carruthers was present. It would appear that this John Carruthers is John Carruthers Jr. and that John Carruthers Sr. had died, if you days earlier. Continuing to the next page, February 1752 references at the bottom of the page. The last will and testament of John Carruthers deceased. But above which there is reference to John Carruthers Esq. as being present in court in para!
graph 70. Clearly, John Carruthers Jr. or probably, the son of John Carruthers deceased is reference to in paragraph 70 and John Carruthers deceased, and his last will and testament adjustment are referenced in paragraph 72

we proceed now to a loose page number 14, dated June 1751 Craven County, North Carolina court minutes, 1749-1756 book for paragraph 43, and the court adjourns, including John Carruthers is being present. Then skipping to the bottom of the page paragraph 45 arson quite interesting references. John Carruthers Jr. is appointed, a commissioner of the roads. The court was adjourned, with reference to John Carruthers, presumably hear John Carruthers Sr.. And then we find a deed of us of sale from a buy a Bangs Abiah Bangs, a deed at sale for 320 acres of land and Craven County, which was acknowledged in open court by a buy a Bangs/ Abiah Bangs. Just noted as a point of reference, directly below that as the last entry on page 14. We see a reference to an estate of felt the new, MEW which could be roux, R. E. Doug. But probably not.

Next is an entry from November to a 1751 to February 1752 Craven County court minutes book for the page is unknown. But we're going to reference paragraphs 60 6162 and 63. This page seems to reference John Carruthers and John Carruthers Jr. three times. In the first paragraph, presumably paragraph 60, the statement is made quote. The court met, according to adjournment, president John Carruthers, John Carruthers Jr. Esq.'s. Then to paragraph 61 -- 92, and other reference to John Carruthers. This presumably senior. Then to paragraph 62 reference to the court, having met and present or John Carruthers and John Carruthers Jr. then to paragraph 63 -- 93, a reference to John Carruthers giving a bond in an a reference to Carruthers, Dr.Chd CHD and John Carruthers Jr. informing the court. In the.

We have again Carruthers Dr CHD and it is unclear to me, what Carruthers Dr. CHD references, but there was reference to a matter requiring discharge from public duties, and it is signed. John Carruthers, John Carruthers Jr.. This single page contains the name John Carruthers 12 times on this single page, clearly John Carruthers Bay and Craven County court.

Is very weathering 10 continuing to dictate. Barry Wetherington continuing to take a, and we have about eight or nine pages left of interest, page 10, what seems to reference March of 1750, and the last number is not available. What other evidence suggests that it was a 7050. 1750 per see a reference to Solomon grew and Southie roux REW Southey REW in which Solomon grew has purchased a hundred acres of land and Craven County, and there is an oath by Southie roux as evidence there to. As a parent pedicle comment,parenthetical comment, it appears that Richard Katt as well purchased to lots from the town of new Bern. And this may be Richard Caswell Jr.. Continuing on this page to paragraph 31 -- 76, we find lots 305 and 306 are purchased by John Carruthers from the commissioners of new Bern and proved in open court. Then lots 305 and 306 were signed by John Carruthers and registered. Then moving to paragraph 32, there is reference to several attorneys, including John Carruthers!
and Southie roux REW next page, March 1750, the court apparently was adjourned and is now met and present our John Carruthers Southie were to and John Carruthers Jr., entitled his Majesty's justices. Southie were the gives an oath for the purchase of some land, there is a deed of sale from Thomas Moore 10, Thomas Martin in paragraph 28, which also includes a deed from Francis Hodges to John Rice 496 acres of land and Craven County. Proved in open court, by the oath that John Carruthers. Further down in paragraph 29 -- 75, is reference to Southie, we will apparently recommending roux as one of the proper persons for sheriff for the next year. Although this matter is, in March of 1750. Not quite clear why they would be recommending a share for the ensuing year. As early as March. But present when the court was adjourned were Southie were to Esq.'s and John Carruthers than last paragraph 30 is a reference to John Carruthers for apparently transfer of a deed proceeding to the n!
ext page numbered six at the bottom for September 1749 through March 1750 and references to John Carruthers and Southie roux, performing a function for the court, and then John Carruthers apparently signs a summons. Along with others for the court. Skipping he to paragraph 18 we have a reference to south into and a reference for whatever guy you to William Brite purchasing land and Simon bright, proving it by oath.

Proceeding to the next page numbered for September 1749. There is a reference to John Carruthers as a justice of the court proceeding to the next page, which is very important. It appears to be the first initial page for the Craven County North Carolina County court minutes. 1749 to 1756. Book for page 1 -- 61, in which the County Court of pleas apparently opens its session in in the September 19, 1741 the 23rd year of his Majesty's reign and present all our John Carruthers Southie were to REW

on this page, we will find reference to John Carruthers Southie were the Rew Jane Carruthers, his wife, John Carruthers Jr., John Carruthers Sr., in which John Carruthers Jr. and his wife Jane are selling property to John Carruthers Sr. two tracts of land containing 1190 acres on the swamp, 150 acres on the north side of the Trent River and a hundred acre island.

Continuing on this page 1 with the specifics, the court opened its session and present were the three justices, John Carruthers, Southie group, and another. And the sheriff was Walter Lane. It was another court event in which the justices present included John Carruthers, but not Southie paragraph going to paragraph 2 of that page, which at the bottom has a reference to Craven County and also to Pamela Coe and Carteret counties and a reference to a Thomas herring HERR ING of passing interest, the primary matter in the middle of the page in paragraph 2 days the deed from John Carruthers Jr. and Jane his wife to John Carruthers Sr. and in which Jane Carruthers was examined privately concerning her right of gallery dowry. We have not learned that John Carruthers Jr. had a wife named Jane, who all in this date, September 23, 1749, has executed a deed from John Carruthers Jr. and Jane Carruthers to John Carruthers Sr. for something over 1400 acres of land.

One reason I mention the sheriff is because later we learned that Joseph Carruthers will be a sheriff in February of 1756.

Proceeding to the next page, which is February 1756, apparently numbered page 92 at the bottom, everywhere seven if the 1756 to May of 1756 court minutes in which we find reference to two. A bulk. A vessel, perhaps a sailing vessel in which there is an action by Abraham Shepherd. Against John Carruthers for the loss of pork, lost by the negligence all of Robinson. The skipper or master of John Carruthers vessel, which is far as I can tell remains unnamed i.e., the vessel. So, we have evidence of John Carruthers owning a vessel, a ship in trade of barrels of pork. Recall that in I believe 1738, Jonathan??? Bangs, and John Carruthers moved to the new Bern area, presumably to engage in shipping, and this is clear evidence that at least John Carruthers was engaged in shipping. Some 20 years later. The.

Down, which is paragraph 327-229, there is reference to Joseph Carruthers sheriff in a matter dated Tuesday the 11th of? The 29th year of the reign of Lord George in a year of our warlords 17... and we will find reference to Joseph Carruthers sheriff on page 91, at page, which we will address in a moment.

On this page, we also see reference to Thomas Martin, Sarah bright, and Williams spite Speight, all the interest for other matters.

February 1756 notes, page 91, refined a number of interesting references including two. Solomon withering 10 Witherington. The page again this on a lawsuit bot against John Carruthers Jr. per annum. But Jr. is crossed out as though it were in error) and the jury finds against John Carruthers for 19 pounds and costs. Further down. There is a certification of the verdict against John Carruthers, and the court then adjourns to the next day being Thursday the 19th of February 1756. The proceeding, then to paragraph 325 -- 228, presumably the next day, and a proceeding, there is reference to Joseph Carruthers, sheriff, period. Joseph Carruthers sheriff gives an oath concerning the sale of three Negroes.

The balance of this page contains a number of interesting references to various people including including reference to a bill of sale and/or a fraudulent deed from James withering 10 or gathering 10 wetherington, Robert King, James Sears, Saul Sol Witherington, and this is no doubt Solomon witherington antiscience by and ask, and Solomon Wetherington in some of these other names apparently constitute a grand jury in paragraph 326. This is on page 91.

We now skipped to further a new Bern District North Carolina loose estate papers, dated 1775 to 1810, abstracted by Dr. Stephen E. Bradley Jr., would further or interesting information including a reference to Alexander Carruthers, Erin Ratliff, John Carruthers, Daniel Wetherington, Nathan Wetherington, Elizabeth Wetherington, Benjamin Wetherington, Ellender Wetherington, Robert Wetherington, husband of Elizabeth Wetherington, John Rice, John Wetherington, coarse John Carruthers Solomon Wetherington, Jane Wetherington, Solomon roux, Southie Wu, William Carruthers, Thomas were then 10, Joseph Carruthers, Captain Hodges, which I will now continue.

I'm going to continue with what appears to be three pages quite similar to the ones a referenced and examined above. All three of these pages are in 1753 the first one in August and the second to in November. August 1753 court minutes book for Craven County North Carolina, paragraph 174. Apparently, the court adjourned until eight o'clock and then met after the adjournment. Present were a number of persons and justice is not including Carruthers here. Apparently there was a jury trial and the jury found Thomas Worthanton was not guilty of the matter for which he was indicted.

He then we find a deed of sale from Joseph Carruthers, which was a knowledge by Carruthers and a deed from Joseph Carruthers to a different gentleman also a good knowledge in open court by Carruthers. The first being in paragraph 174 the second being in paragraph 175-152. Then to paragraph 176 in which we have a deed from John Carruthers and Jane Carruthers his wife to someone for the hundred acre island that was previously mentioned. Least I'd believe it was previously mentioned. And the sale was a knowledge by John and Jane Carruthers and Jane Carruthers was examined for her right of dowry. That's the end of the first page going out to the second page, November 1753, paragraph 191 -- 160, and we have a deed from John Carruthers and Jane Carruthers, his wife from John and Jane for 610 acres of land in Craven County. Proceeding now down to paragraph 192, we have deeds of sale to Solomon roux. There are three deeds to Solomon roux, and an a fourth deed from William Carruthers!
to Solomon roux for Lot number 92 in new Bern town. For what south to gay both. And proceeding down to the bottom of the page, in paragraph 194, a gentleman intrusion into a bond with William Carruthers, apparently not connected with the William Carruthers matter immediately above

pro se proceeding then to the third and last page, find a reference to John Carruthers, moving the court for order to keep an ordinary. At his dwelling house in new Bern, which was granted.

This is the end of those similarly appearing loose pages, although we will now proceed to eight or 10 also labeled newspapers for new Bern was other interesting entries. We have about eight or 10 pages here and will began with page 28, which makes references first to Richard spate SP AE IG HT parentheses. This could be the Richard spate for which the DNA are group in new Bern, after which it is named). And it we find and other reference toREW or Rouse to roux or Roush, a reference to Erin Ratliff, and then some further Carruthers references. In page to start in paragraph 81, there is reference to Alexander Carruthers as a juror. Then in paragraph 82, a reference to John Carruthers for data 15 July 1804 expenses in John Carruthers, and then a summons to John Carruthers. Now to page 37, lose a reference in September, a night of 1805 to Nathan Wetherington, and in the same paragraph to Daniel Wetherington, both of those are Witherington! Then to page 49. There is a rougher and !
reference of July 1803 to expense tickets for John Carruthers in paragraph 155 area. Next page 71, paragraph 235, a reference to Daniel witherington in a matter having to do with Joshua Parrott. Paragraph

now to page 79, paragraph 258, entitled John Russell, in which we find references to Elendar Witherington Elizabeth Witherington, versus Benjamin Witherington. He

going to page 102 reference to Robert Wi in paragraph 334, March 1799, the plea of Benjamin Wetherington defendant to the petition of Elizabeth Wetherington. Said Robert Wetherington deceased, the father of said Benjamin had conveyed to tracts of land to said Benjamin as deeds of Kant, said Elizabeth answered that the conveyance was made after her marriage with the said Robert. 19 March 1799 order to lay off eight hour of 160 acres to Elizabeth Wetherington. The property of her late husband, and part of the document is missing.

We proceed next to page 72, which is difficult to date, but a cover sheet suggest that it's a bit. 1742 to 1748 book 3, Craven County North Carolina court minutes on which appears references to John Rice, John Wetherington John Carruthers, and also Thomas Moore to answer a bright and pairing herring. The top of the page began this quote all the land was proved by the oath of John Rice; said John Weaver in 10 praised the same may be admitted to record granted directly below that are references to Simon bright, Anthony Herring, Thomas Martin and others.

Then in paragraph 483. There is reference to John Carruthers Esq. and then further John Carruthers apparently involved in court proceedings. And then towards the bottom, paragraph 484 -- 256, we see reference to a William Rice

Next to page 71, the last is page 72, so this precedes the last page, and this page mentions John Carruthers as involved in the court proceedings and then in the last paragraph or 82 -- 255. We have a deed of sale to John Carruthers for 150 acres of land and a deed of sale from Simon bright to John Wetherington for 160 acres of land.

And then to the last page of these open papers, page 85, paragraph 523 and thereupon will find references to John Carruthers, John Wetherington Salomon Wetherington as follows. The first paragraph references, the court meeting and John Carruthers being one of his Majesty's justices. Continuing in that same paragraph, we see reference to an appraisal produced by John Carruthers Esq. and then that.

Is a deed of sale from John Wetherington. For five acres of land, proved by the oath of Thomas Lewis Perdue. The surname Lewis is of interest because in 1741, is a significant date for William Wetherington married Elizabeth Lewis in North Carolina, perhaps in the Smithfield area, although, perhaps uncertain. The next paragraph, reflect a deed of sale from Salomon Wetherington four or 72 acres of land proved by the oath of Thomas Lewis again and this reflects two different Wetherington's at or about the same time and place an involving sale of land from two different Wetherington's to a Francis Stringer, and both proved by the oath of a Lewis. This could suggest an opportunity for Wetherington said Lewis is to have been involved. Such that they might have met. There is a suggestion, further down that this matter was taking place in 1740 sex, just a few years after the 1741 date mentioned above, specifically, May 14, 1746. That date is a reference to a signature by a Depp, a s!
heriff and not necessarily reflective of the date of this proceeding. This page 85, including paragraph 523 and 524, which mentioned the Carruthers and the Wetherington's does not have a date on it and it is not clear that the date mentioned in 1746 May 14, 1746 is a date that is current at the prime of this pager is a date at which that that the sheriff signed any another matter. The two pages, prior pages 7172. Are some other early, not specific as to a date on the page. This could well be a transcription error by whoever wrote these notes by simply not referencing the dates, but there are references to for example, on page 85, in paragraph 524 -- 278, the first reference, which includes the court meeting pursuant to adjournment president, which is John Carruthers, a reference to the 18th. Perhaps that is the 18th day of the month, although the month is in the den of five. This is just before the reference to the May 14, 1746 reference of the signing of the deputy sheriff,!
which could suggest that the deputy sheriff signed this about four pages before us are four days before the date of the 18th that the the perhaps accordance in session.

And this is the last page of these types of newspapers, and so a the date. It is going to the space of one does work, remain undetermined al-Assad somehow missed others. This terminates in concludes, the analysis of the newspapers and/or court minutes, all as were provided in the packet a document sent to me by Eugenia Brown in July at a 2000, although there are another 40 pages more or less yet to be analyzed. None of which appear to be on pages of the North Carolina Craven County court records.
