1. Henry Rew, son of Memucan Rew and Hannah Ives*, (#9977) was born in
Connecticut 19 MAR 1782. Individual flags: Newspaper; 1883 Hist. Henry
died JUN 1869 in Mainesburg, Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania,
at age 87. Tioga County Agitator - Jul 7th 1869 issue: Mainesburg News.
Another of the pioneers of Sullivan has passed away. Henry Rew, aged 88
years, was buried Thursday, July 1st. His body was interred JUN 1869 in
State Road Cemetery, Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania.
He married Anna Benson * 21 JAN 1810. (Anna Benson* is #9978.) Anna was
born 1776 in New York. Anna died 1861 at age 85. Her body was interred
1861 in State Road Cemetery, Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania.
Tombstone says Anna Rue, wife of Henry d. 1861 age 84.
Historical Note: . "The first post office in the township was established
in 1814; Henry Rew postmaster. It was called 'Sullivan' post-office. The one
at Mainesburg was not established until some years later, John Maine being
the first postmaster. He was succeeded in the office by John Fox, who
retained it for several years."
Henry was listed as the head of a family on the 1820 Census in Sullivan
Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Anna and Henry wre both 26-45. They
had a male 16-18 and two males under ten.

children living with them were two sons 10-15 and 15-20, Justus and
Benjamin.
Henry registered to pay taxes 1832 in Sullivan Township, Tioga County,
Pennsylvania. 8 improved acres, 88 wild acres, one stud horse ($75), total
valuation $263. county tax $1.90, state tax .26.
Henry registered to pay taxes 1833 in Sullivan Township, Tioga County,
Pennsylvania. 8 improved acres, 88 wild acres, 1 Stud Horse, 2 oxen
Henry registered to pay taxes 1835 in Sullivan Township, Tioga County,
Pennsylvania. Listed as Henry Rue, he had 8 acres improved land, 82 acres
wild land, 1 horse, 2 oxen, 2 cows.
Henry was listed as the head of a family on the 1840 Census in Sullivan
Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. The household of Anna and Henry
included one male 20-30 (Benjamin?), one female 10-15, one female 20-30.
Henry was between 50 and 60. Two adult women, one 50-60 and the other 60-70
were in the house, one of them would have been Anna.
He was listed as a household member of Benjamin I. Rew's house in the
Census of 1850 in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Benjamin
was a farmer. Henry was a blacksmith with property valued at $750. An early
postmaster of Sullivan - See 1883 Tioga County History p. 31 appendix under
J.H. Phillips. Migrated to Sullivan in 1819, although some records imply an
earlier migration..
Henry Rew and Anna Benson* had the following children:
2 i. Justus2 Rew (#4420) was born 1811-1820. He married Phoebe
Reynolds 21 MAY 1841. (Phoebe Reynolds reference LR 57) (Phoebe Reynolds
is #4419.) Phoebe was born 27 APR 1814 in Sullivan Township, Tioga County,
Pennsylvania. Phoebe was the daughter of Samuel Reynolds and Anna Mann.
Phoebe died 17 AUG 1877 in Lyndon, Lyndon Township, Whiteside County,
Illinois, at age 63. From Lee Reynolds, p. 40: Phoebe and Justus had no
children but many of her nieces and nephews lived with her at different
times. One writes, "She was like a mother to me. In fact, she was a mother
to everyone. I only wish the people of today could be as much to their
fellowmen as this old lady was when I knew her."
Justus was listed as the head of a family on the 1840 Census in Sullivan
Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Justus lived next door to Phoebe
Reynold's brother, Thomas, and just one house away from his parents. His
household included two males under five, one male under five, and one male
15-20. Two females 20-30 and one female 60-70 were also in the household.
Justus may have been married prior to marrying Phoebe in 1841. or some other
confusion may be present. Needs to be investigaed. Does not fit with
information on file.
Justus was listed as the head of a family on the 1850 Census in
Whiteside County, Illinois. Justus was in District 37 of Whiteside County
in 1850.
Justus was listed as the head of a family on the 1860 Census in Lyndon,
Lyndon Township, Whiteside County, Illinois.
3 ii. John Rew (#74278) was born 1814. John died 1818 in Sullivan
Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, at age 4. His body was interred 1818
in Rumsey-Doud Cemetery, Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania.
+ 4 iii. Benjamin I. Rew was born 1820.

Second Generation
4. Benjamin I.2 Rew (Henry1) (#9979) was born in Pennsylvania 1820.
Individual flags: Obituary. Benjamin died 27 MAY 1881 in Sullivan Township,
Tioga County, Pennsylvania, at age 60. Mansfield Advertiser 8 Jun 1881:
Died Benjamin I. Rew, Mainesburg, age 60. Born on same farm. Brother Justice
living. Died of liver ailment. His body was interred MAY 1881 in State Road
Cemetery, Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania.
He married Susan Fletcher BEF 1848. (Susan Fletcher reference 1900 S 004)
(Susan Fletcher is #9980.) Susan was born MAR 1822 in New York. Susan was
the daughter of Humphrey Fletcher* and Eleanor Unknown (Fletcher). Surname
based on Ebenezer Hubbard in her household in 1860 assumed to be her father.
(#9984). 1900 S 004. Jean Rumsey gives her name as Susan Fletcher. Nelson
Fletcher is called a brother in law of Benjamin Rew in 1880 and Susan has a
daughter named Eleanor, possibly after Eleanor, UNKNOWN (Fletcher), her
possible mother.
Benjamin was listed as the head of a family on the 1860 Census in Sullivan
Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Benjamin was a farmer with real
property worth $600 and personal property worth $300.

Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Benjamin was listed as the head of a
family on the 1880 Census in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania.
Benjamin I. Rew and Susan Fletcher had the following children:
5 i. John3 Rew (#13332) was born 7 JAN 1848. John died 9 APR 1848
in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, at age unknown. His body
was interred APR 1848 in State Road Cemetery, Sullivan Township, Tioga
County, Pennsylvania.
6 ii. Rachel Rew (#9981) was born in Sullivan Township, Tioga
County, Pennsylvania 1849. Individual flags: Obituary. Rachel died 13 OCT
1885 in Richmond Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, at age 36.
Newspaper: Rachel-wife of Mr. John PHILLIPS died at her home on the State
Road, southeast of this boro yesterday afternoon. She had been ill about six
weeks, and the immediate cause of her death was rheumatism of the heart. She
leaves a kind and loving husband and four young children. Her mother and two
sisters, Miss Eleanor REW and Mrs. Adelbert Doud reside in Sullivan
township. From Mansfield Advertiser: 14th Oct 1885. She married John H.
Phillips. (John H. Phillips is #13486.)
John was born 1848 in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania.
John was the son of Leonard Phillips* and Nancy Knight*. John was listed
as the head of a family on the 1880 Census in Sullivan Township, Tioga
County, Pennsylvania. J. H. Phillips is a native of Sullivan, and was born
in 1848. His father, Leonard, came from Massachusetts and his mother, Nancy
was from New York: he is a farmer. He married Miss Rachel Rew, a
granddaughter of Henry Rew, who located in Sullivan about 1819. He was one
of the early postmasters of the town. (1883 Tioga County History page 31 of
appendix) I have information that Rachel had four children, but I have names
just for the first three.
7 iii. Eleanor Rew (#9982) was born in Sullivan Township, Tioga
County, Pennsylvania APR 1855. She taught Melissa E. Bartlett Mainesburg
School in Mainesburg, Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania 19 MAR
1904. Event flag: Souvenir. Since the ages of the students in this group
are between 11 and 18, it appears that Eleanor taught just the upper level
students. Ned Reynolds is included on the March list even though he died in
November. Information for this event is from the Souvenir booklet published
March 19, 1904 and presented to her students by Eleanor Rew. This souvenir
book was in the possession of Mittie Bartlett's daughter Marion Rumsey
(Knapp) until 1994 when Joyce Tice obtained it through Joan Nash (O'dell's)
friendship with Marion. 1900 with sister Helen Rew (Doud)
8 iv. Helen Rew (#9983) was born in Sullivan Township, Tioga County,
Pennsylvania NOV 1857. Individual flags: Newspaper. Her body was interred
in State Road Cemetery, Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. She
married Adelbert Doud 22 JUN 1873 in Mansfield, Richmond Township, Tioga
County, Pennsylvania. Mansfield Advertiser 23rd Jun 1875: Married Adelbert
Doud and Miss Hellen Rew of Mainesburg Jun 22nd by Rev. J. E. Bell at the
U.S. Hotel Mansfield. (Adelbert Doud is #9242.)
Dell was born JUN 1854 in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania.
Dell was the son of George Washington Doud and Phoebe J. Trumble. Dell died
1927 in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, at age 73. His body
was interred 1927 in State Road Cemetery, Sullivan Township, Tioga County,
Pennsylvania. Dell was listed as the head of a family on the 1880 Census in
Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. He resided in Sullivan
Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania 1908. Farmer, Mansifield PO
Helen, as Adelbert Doud's wife, resided with him in Sullivan Township,

Recently, I was researching and located some REWs (Sol & Southey) in New
Bern Craven Co NC from the mid 1700s, possibly related to my ancestors - but
no proofs yet.:
"1750 per see a reference to Solomon and Southey REW in which Solomon has
purchased a hundred acres of land in Craven County, and there is an oath by
Southie REW as evidence there to."
