PROMINENT LEADER TAKEN BY DEATH
H. Mark Jesse, 79, a retired business man, was found dead at his home Tuesday morning, Jan. 5, by his son and daughter-in-law, Mr. & Mrs. Mortes Jesse. Mr. & Mrs. Jesse had spent a social evening with friends Sunday evening and as Mrs. Jesse stepped out of the house she slipped on
ice and fractured her hip. She was taken home and Mr. Jesse called the physician Monday when she was taken to the hospital. He apparently was in comparatively good health as he had taken care of her needs during the previous night and was with the family for the rest of Monday. He
retired Monday evening and died in his sleep early the next morning. He was born July 10, 1874 in Pella, the son of Mr. & Mrs. Albert Jesse. He did carpenter work in this locality before going into the tavern business in 1899. He was married to Louise Binder on Nov. 16, 1899. They made their home in Clintonville ever since. They celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1949.
Jesse retired from the tavern business in 1913 and then sold cars for a short time. Then he retired permanently. He was active in civic and church work in the St. Martin Lutheran church.
He was an alderman for the fourth ward for more than 25 years and up to his death was a director of the Clintonville Federal Loan Association. He was an elder in the church for many years and was a member of the church building fund and church remodeling committees.
Survivors include the widow; one son, Mortes, Cloverleaf Lakes; 5 grandchildren, 5 brothers, Gust, Clintonville, August, DeQueen, Ark., Charles and William of Pella, and Art, Shawano; 3 sisters, Mrs. Mary Martin, Mrs. Louise Palmquist and Mrs. Laura Mailahn, all of Shawano. One son, Luman, died on May 19, 1939ยป and a daughter Florence died when a small child.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 PM Friday, Jan. 8, at St. Martin Lutheran church and burial will be in Graceland cemetery. Frank Beer, Paul Dekarske, Walter Essman, Frank Manser, Fred Jahn and Rudolph Schmiedeke will be the pallbearers.
