Martha Maria Hughes Cannon, was the first woman elected to a state senate in
the USA. She was also a noted pioneer of women and children's medicine.
Although Martha is well known in her adopted country, she has a hospital
named after her and a statue; she is virtually unheard of in the country of
her birth, so - I would like to write a short article about her for a local
paper, but I am having difficulty in finding one crucial piece of evidence.
Every biographical reference that I have been able to find states that she
was born near Llandudno on July 1st 1857. I know that her father's name was
Peter Hughes (a cabinet maker) and that she had a sister Annie Hughes. The
family emigrated to the US in 1860, so Martha will not be on any UK census
Would any lister happen to know WHERE near Llandudno Martha was born.
