There is a birth registration in March quarter of 1852 at Montgomery for a
Mary STEWART. A Mary HEWITSON appears in 1881 census in Carlisle, Cumberland
who gives a birthplace of Welshpool, Montgomery.
The GRO index cross matches the name of Mary STEWART with that of William
HEWITSON in the June quarter of 1876 in the marriages index suggesting that
this is the Mary STEWART appearing in 1871 census for Saddle Lane in
Carlisle with a birthplace showing simply as "Wales".
The focus of this line of research is [are?] the nephew, sister and mother
of Mary Stewart. Unfortunately both her sister and mother were born in
Scotland pre-registration and mother Jane is a widow in 1871 and escapes the
1851 census for Dumfries and Galloway [or does not appear in the on-line
census provided by the regional libraries and archives service] denying a
few opportunities to find father STEWART.
Can listers advise me of the most likely church for the baptism of a Scots
Presbyterian born in Welshpool or the county of Montgomery in 1852 and, if
the absence from the Dumfries census is explained by this family moving to
Wales pre-1851, whether the census for Welshpool and/or Montgomery is
accessible in any form outside of the local archives?
