Dear All,
I was intrigued by Gareth's account of the cursing well of Ffynnon Eilian in
Llandrillo yn Rhos. The place is usually referred to as Llanelian. In
Anglesey, we also have a Llaneilian (it is apparently the same saint so I
can't account for the different spelling)- in the NE of the island. The
church is very old and interesting. St. Eilian's well is about 2 miles from
the church near the coast and it is also a cursing well! St Eilian
traditionally did some damage (miraculously) to a local landowner who broke
his word to him - I can't remember the details - he may have made him blind.
When the landowner repented his sight was restored - or something like that!
I will attempt to find out some more about the saint and his cursing well in
Anglesey, if anyone is interested. Eilian's chapel is attached to Llaneilian
church and is at a lower level and at a different angle to the rest of the
church.
