Searching for other descendants of Thomas Woodward(pronounced Woodard) who
was a Cherokee living in Woodward Town,Ga.(a small settlement in the old
Hightower District of the Cherokee Nation near present day Rome, Ga.).
Thomas was a slave owner and was married to Elizabeth also called Betty and
Betsey with her Cherokee name being Quattie. They had several children
including sons Sunday, Hogshooter and Red Bird and a daughter named Sara who
married Mathew Moore, also a Cherokee. Thomas's dates of birth, marriage,
death, etc. are not known to me, nor his parentage.Thomas was a close and
trusted friend to Chief John Ross...so much so that Thomas and 4 other
Cherokee were sent to negotiate peace between the U.S. troops and Seminole in
Florida during the last Seminole War. The Cherokee, instead, were used as
decoys, unbeknownst to them, in luring the Seminole Chiefs into a fort.
Thomas was PROBABLY born about late 1700's. He may not have died until 1860's
or so.I have a reference to Pin Indians shooting old Tom Woodward in the arm
in Tahlequah during the Civil War.If anything sounds familiar, please contact
Donna Byas, 2804 Dalewood Terrace, Norman, OK 73071
or email at Wado!!
