This may give you a clue. There were a large number of orphan homes
created for Civil War orphans. If you query the individual counties'
historical societies, they can let you know if there were one locally.
It's good to remember too that Virginia before the War included all of
what became West Virginia (and, even earlier, also the territory that
became Kentucky).
Then, too, the Virginia Archives in Richmond are legendary for their
stores of info. I've had the folks at National Archives refer me to
Richmond.
