Hello Michael and Sandra,

Sorry for the delay, the builders have started work this week on the
permanent repairs to the storm damage caused last autumn by the
mini-tornado and so life has been rather hectic here for the past 3
days!

1 Yes, William, son of Philip WOOLGAR & Caroline CHAMPION was the
last Macebearer of Seaford (see image on the picnic page of our web
site). He was born 22 Mar 1828 and died 27 Nov 1909 - the photograph
was taken on 22 Jan 1901, according to the copy at Seaford Museum.
This William married Sarah (surname unknown at present) and are on the
1881 census at Seaford ref RG11/1041 folio 127 a & b. Certainly their
MI indicates that William and Sarah are buried in the same grave.
Chart MISC 036 No. 1011.

2 The entry on the 1881 census at Portsea RG11/1154 folio 90b,
refers to William, son of Henry WOOLGAR and Elizabeth Ann WOOLGAR.
He was born 11 Nov 1828, date of death not known, but after 1891
census. he married Jane BROWN 25 Dec 1847 Portsmouth. I did wonder
if this was the child who died aged 7 in 1836, but the Marriage
Certificate does show that the groom was the son of "Hy WOOLGAR,
Smith" and the census entry provides some confirmation of the place
and date of birth/baptism. Chart MISC 035 No. 1001.

3 William WOOLGAR, son of Thomas WOOLGAR by his first wife Mary
WOOLGAR. Baptised 03 Jan 1782 at Seaford. According to his headstone
at Seaford, he died on 16 Mar 1870 aged 90; but the parish register
records that he was buried on 21 Mar 1870 aged 88. He appears to have
married Lucy BUTLER - date unknown at present. Chart MISC 047 No.
1094. They had five known children, all baptised at Seaford either as
BUTLER or as WOOLGAR-BUTLER, including Charles WOOLGAR-BUTLER on 26
Jun 1831 (No. 1097).

4 Francis WOOLGAR buried 1823 aged 72. This one is a mystery. The
MI was collected over 100 years ago and is listed in Sussex
Archaeological Collections Volume XII on Page 13. The nearest entry
that I have been able to find in the burial register is for a James
WOOLGAR bur 16 Feb 1822 aged 72 - and I have no idea who he is either!

5 William WOOLGAR buried 22 Mar 1836 Seaford aged 7. Again, I have
never been able to identify him. Certainly there is no third baptism
entry for him at Seaford around 1828/9.

I have sent Sue Greatbanks images of the three extant WOOLGAR MI's at
Seaford and I expect that they will appear somewhere on the web site
shortly.

Best wishes,

Marion
