Miriam Hedman Silveira passed away on Thursday, May 5, 2005, at the age of
79. She was born on the family farm in San Joaquin, CA on October 13, 1925,
to William and Aina Hedman. Miriam began her elementary school years
speaking only Finnish. She attended Tranquillity High School and Fresno
State College. While attending college during WWII, she volunteered at the
U.S.O. She taught sixth grade at Tranquillity Elementary prior to her
marriage to Bill Silveira in 1947. Miriam and Bill purchased farmland in
Mendota, CA, growing cotton, grain and sugar beets. They were blessed with
four children. After the death of her husband in 1967, Miriam continued
farming with her sons Michael and Richard. Miriam was very involved in her
children's activities including troop leader for Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and
teaching Sunday School at the Methodist Church in Mendota. Miriam was an
avid reader and enjoyed music and time spent with friends and family,
especially her grandchildren. Many happy times were enjoyed at her cabin at
Lake Tahoe, NV. She is survived by son Michael and his wife Judy of Fresno;
daughter, Susan Silveira of Fresno; son Richard and his wife Joanne of
Mendota; daughter, Lisa Gragnani and her husband Michael of Fresno; her
beloved grandchildren, Leslie Marshall and her husband Tucker of Lee's
Summit, MO, Bill Silveira of Ithaca, NY, Andrew Silveira of McKinney, TX,
and Vanessa, Candace and Mikey Gragnani of Fresno; and one
great-grand-daughter, Elizabeth Marshall. She is also survived by her
brothers, Wilmer Hedman and his wife Jeri of San Joaquin and Bill Hedman and
his wife Sue of Fresno; sister, Eilene Pettit and her husband Joe of Madera;
sisters-in-law, Sarah Silveira, Elsie Brum, Eletha Sillanpaa, Margaret
Ventura, Lorraine McCollom and Elsie Silveira; and many beautiful nieces and
nephews. Our family extends heartfelt thanks to Dr. John Telles, Dr. Rod
Kraft, Maureen Saunders, Betty Ann Roque, the entire staff at St. Agnes
Medical Center, and St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church. The family would
also like to thank Pastor Joe Pettit III from Quail Lake Community Church
for his comfort, guidance and wonderfulness. A Funeral Service will be held
at St. Anthony of Padua Church on Tuesday, May 10, 2005, at 10:00 a.m. In
lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to St. Anthony of Padua Catholic
Church, Children's Hospital of Central California or St. Agnes Cardiac Unit.
