Roy Edwin Wright
December 22, 1951- August 22, 2005
After a long and courageous battle with cancer, Roy Edwin Wright departed
this world on Monday, August 22, 2005 in Austin, Texas.
Roy was born December 22, 1951 and raised in Hermitage, Tennessee where he
graduated from Dupont High School in 1970. He then graduated from Middle
Tennessee State University where he received his bachelor's degree in
psychology with a minor in music.
Roy worked for more than 25 years at the Texas School for the Blind and
Visually Impaired. He began his career with the school as a houseparent and
worked his way to become the Director of Technology Services. Under Roy's
direction and diligent hard work, the Texas School for the Blind has become
one of the most technologically advanced schools for the visually impaired.
Through his dedication and leadership, Roy earned the love and respect of
After moving to Austin, Texas, Roy met and married the love of his life,
Yvonne Del Rio. They shared 25 wonderful years together, and were blessed
with three extraordinary children. Roy's family was his first priority. His
spiritual growth, work, and community service were also very important to
After moving to Austin, Roy renewed his spiritual journey when he became a
member of the Austin Christian Community. Most recently Roy was active in
numerous church and spiritual groups. Roy attended the First Evangelical
Free Church and participated in the Gathering of Men ministry. He also
attended the Saturday morning Order of Luke prayer services at St. Matthew's
In a posting from his blog (http://roywright.blogspot.com), Roy reflected
that his illness had created "a wonderful experience with God." He
encouraged others to "hug your wife, kids, grandkids, and friends and
rejoice in this wonderful life because it is fragile".
Roy's patience and genuine concern for others made him a natural mentor for
many young people. He cheerfully accepted involvement in his community. Roy's
natural leadership skills shined in his volunteer work with the Boy Scouts
of America where he served as Cub Scout leader for Pack 14 and assistant
troop leader for Troop 5. Roy also spent many hours volunteering for the
South Austin Little League where he served as Treasurer and also as a Board
Roy is survived by his wife, Yvonne Del Rio Wright, two sons Brandon (21)
and Miles (14), one daughter Sage (18) all of Austin, Texas. His mother,
Jolene Warren Wright and one brother Gerald Wright, both of Nashville, TN,
also survive him. He leaves many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and
in-laws in both Tennessee and El Paso, Texas. Roy is preceded in death by
his father, Roy Eugene Wright of Hermitage, TN and infant son of Austin, TX.
Also left to mourn his death are his extended family members at the School
for the Blind, the Troop 5 Boy Scout Family, and the South Austin Little
League. He will be greatly missed by his neighborhood family and all the
friends too numerous to mention.
The family would like to thank the physicians, nurses and staff of Seton
Hospital, the nursing staff at the Texas Oncology, and especially Dr. Tu of
MD Anderson Hospital. The family also wishes to extend a heartfelt "thank
you" to their many family and friends for all their love and support during
this difficult time, especially Roy's friends of the United Methodist Church
of Hermitage, Tennessee for their continuous love and support.
God bless you my dear husband, as you continue on your spiritual journey.
Memorial services will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Friday, August 26, 2005 at
First Evangelical Free Church, 4220 Monterey Oaks Blvd.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Wright Children College
Fund. Please make checks payable to Yvonne Wright.
