JORGE AWAPARA, Professor Emeritus, Biochemistry at Rice University died
peacefully Wednesday, December 7, 2005 in Houston,TX. Jorge was born in
Arequipa Peru on January 15, 1918. He studied chemistry in Germany at the
Rheinisch Wesfaelische Technische Hochschule, (now Aachen University of
Technology) from 1936-39. With the onset of WWII he returned to Arequipa
briefly, then transferred his studies to Michigan State University where he
obtained Bachelor and Master of Science degrees in 1941 and 1942. His
doctorate in Biochemistry was awarded by the University of Southern
California in 1948. He was a Research Associate at the University of Texas,
M. D. Anderson Hospital from 1948 until 1957 at which time he joined the
faculty of Rice Institute (now Rice University) as an Associate Professor,
becoming Full Professor in 1962. During his career at M. D. Anderson
Hospital and Rice University he made many important contributions to the
field of biochemistry which received a large number of citations in world
literature. His research work was internationally known. Jorge loved his
chosen profession and was popular with his students undergraduate as well as
graduate. He retired in 1984. Jorge is survived by his wife, Harriet Murphy
Awapara, his daughter Lily Awapara Miles of Houston, two sisters, Elena
Tabja and Maria Jalilie of Lima Peru, as well as numerous nieces and
nephews. Special thanks to Bobbie Williams for her loving care these last
months. Visitation will be held at The Settegast-Kopf Funeral Home on
Saturday afternoon from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.. Jorge's wish was to have his
ashes interred with his beloved parents, Abdala Awapara and Aurora Abugosh
Awapara in Arequipa Peru. A family memorial will be held in Peru at a later
date. For those desiring, memorials may be made to the Biochemistry and Cell
Biology Scholarship Fund at Rice University, the Houston S.P.C.A., the
Humane Society of Houston or to a charity of your choice.
