Brenton L. Hughes
Brenton L. Hughes Brenton L. Hughes, formerly of Georgetown, Texas,
currently of Cloudcroft, New Mexico, passed away November 8, 2005, after a
valiant fight with cancer. Mr. Hughes was born May 22, 1937, to Leland
Hughes and Helen Moody Hughes. Mr. Hughes attended the University of Texas,
Austin and played basketball for the Longhorns from 1955-1960. He served in
the United States Army from November 1960 though November 1962. In 1963, Mr.
Hughes married Susan Crawford. The two were married in Redding, California.
Mr. Hughes graduated from U.T. in 1965 and began his career in coaching high
school sports while earning his M.Ed. from Tarelton State University, which
he received in 1975. He first served as the boys and girls high school
basketball coach in Itasca, Texas from 1965-1979, and then the boys high
school basketball coach at Little-Cypress-Mauriceville C.I.S.D. in Orange,
Texas from 1979-1981. In 1981, Mr. Hughes took the position of Assistant
Principal at Georgetown High School, a position he held for 22 years until
his retirement in 2002, after 37 years in education. To athletes he coached,
to the students he taught, Mr. Hughes was a motivator. He impacted the lives
of those he coached and taught, left an indelible mark on countless lives.
Mr. Hughes is survived by his wife Susan; his daughter and son-in-law,
Brooke and Kenny Calhoun of Hurst, Texas; his son, Lance Hughes and wife
Nancy Patton of Lubbock, Texas; his brother and sister-in-law, David and
Diane Hughes; his sister and brother-in-law, Lynn and Murl Kuehn; two
grandsons, Colton and Jared Calhoun; and a large extended family which
includes six nephews, two nieces, five great nieces, and two great nephews.
There will be two visitations. The first will be held Thursday, November 10,
2005 at The Gabriels Funeral Chapel, Georgetown, Texas from 6:00 p.m. to
8:00 p.m. The second will be held Friday, November 11, 2005, at Clayton Kay
Vaughn Funeral Home, Itasca, Texas from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Funeral
services will be at the First Presbyterian Church of Itasca, Texas, at 2:00
p.m. on Saturday, November 12, 2005. The family has requested that in lieu
of flowers, donations be made to the Brenton Hughes Memorial Scholarship
Fund (Itasca I.S.D., c/o Teresa Rinehart, 123 College Street, Itasca, Texas
76055). Writer's Note, I went to see Brenton in the hospital the day before
he died. I was profoundly humbled by and will forever remember Brenton's
sense of humor and his tough spirit, the kind of spirit that knows no pain,
the kind that knows no death.
