Memorial services for John Eric Teamer, a San Francisco (CA)high school
teacher and advocate for gay rights and AIDS treatment programs, have been
set for January 14.

Mr. Teamer, who was 53, died of AIDS on December 21. In addition to spending
26 years as a public school teacher, he worked to improve AIDS treatment
programs and civil rights for gays.

He was a founding member of the Gay-Lesbian Tennis Federation and served as
co-chairman of a second group, Black & White Men Together.

He also served on the board of directors of the National Task Force on AIDS
Prevention and the Black Coalition on AIDS. In addition, he was an acting
director of the Kapuna West Inner City Family AIDS Network.

Mr. Teamer was born in Asheville, N.C., and received his bachelor's degree
from Blackburn College in Carlonville, Ill.

He served in the Philippines as a Peace Corps volunteer from 1963 to 1965
and later taught at Sacramento Senior High School before earning a master's
degree in science education from Atlanta University. He then taught from
1971 to 1992 at Woodrow Wilson High and the Ida B. Wells Continuation School
in San Francisco.

Mr. Teamer was a member of several civil rights organizations, including the
Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, Lesbians and Gays of
African-American Descent for Democratic Action and the American Civil
Liberties Union of Northern California.

Mr. Teamer is survived by Michael Foo, his companion of 12 years; his
parents, John Teamer of Asheville and Leontine Lynom of Memphis, Tenn.; and
his brothers Charles and Sam, both of Memphis, and his sister, Joy Sue, of
Boston.

Memorial services will be held from 1 to 2:30 p.m. on January 14 at the
Columbarium, 1 Loraine Court, San Francisco. Donations to the National AIDS
Foundation Task Force or the Black Coalition on AIDS are preferred.
