--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
MARY KATHRYN (LOWRANCE) SHERMAN, 90, passed away peacefully Wednesday, March
29, 2006 in Austin, Texas. Kathryn was born in Charlotte, North Carolina on
September 25, 1915 to the late Bill Arp Lowrance and Gussie Mae (Keeter)
Lowrance of Forest City, North Carolina. She is also preceded in death by
her loving husband, Col. Robert F. Sherman, who passed away May 11, 1998;
brother, Bomar Arp Lowrance and sister-in-law, Martha; and mother-in-law,
Grace "Dear" Sherman.
Kathryn was born and raised in Charlotte, NC where her family was
well-known. Her father was the former Editor and Chief of The Mecklinburg
Times now known as The Charlotte Observer. She served as president of her
sorority, Zeta Tau Alpha, at Queens College in NC where she graduated and
later became a certified school teacher. She met and married the love of her
life, "Bob" Sherman from Harlingen, TX and became a devoted military wife.
They had two children, Sandy and Ron, and led a full life of travel before
retiring to Onion Creek Golf Community in Austin. "Kathy" and Bob enjoyed
many wonderful years together playing golf and entertaining family as well
as close friends and neighbors. They were also long-time, devoted members of
Hyde Park Baptist Church.
Kathryn is survived by her loving family: daughter, Sandra (Sherman) Trader
and husband Robert F., Jr. of Houston; her son, Robert F. Sherman, Jr. and
wife Jill Goodwin of Austin; her sisters-in-law, Betty Jo DeCuir and husband
Cliff of Sacramento, California and Shirley Sherman of Oklahoma; her
grandchildren, Edmund B. "Quint" Berry, V, of Austin, Kimberly B. Link and
husband George F., III of Dallas, Christopher Sherman and wife Remle of
Richmond, Virginia, Tara Sherman Bass and husband Brad of Victoria, Texas;
Travis Weimer of Houston; her precious great-granddaughters, Payton Morgan
Berry, Tyler Ann Link, Xena, Axis and Phoenix Baass and one angel expected
in August, Delaney Hope Sherman and great-grandsons, James Austin and
Clayton Harrison Link; one niece and one nephew and their families; other
extended family members; many, many friends and wonderful neighbors who,
through their support and loving help, allowed Kathryn to live out her life
safely at home, surrounded by everyone and everything that she loved.
Although there were always many "guardian angels" watching over Kathryn, the
family would like to especially acknowledge and give a heartfelt thanks of
appreciation to a few...her dear caregiver, Alecia Pineda, who put a sparkle
in her eye and made her laugh alot and Darlene Link for the love and
tireless support she provided Kathryn and her family during the last 5 weeks
she was in the hospital. Another very special thank you is also in order for
the entire staff at Cypress-Fairbanks Funeral Home and most especially the
owner, Jim Choate. They have made one of the most difficult times we could
experience so much easier by taking care of our mother with the utmost grace
and dignity possible.
The family cordially invites Kathryn's friends to a Visitation Saturday,
April 1, 2006 between the hours of 4:00 and 7:00 PM at Cypress-Fairbanks
Funeral Home in Houston, Texas. Kathryn will also lie in state at her
residence in Austin, Texas where her family will greet friends and neighbors
Sunday, April 2, 2006 between the hours of 4:00 and 6:00 PM. Please call
(713) 501-1665 for address instructions and/or directions.
Kathryn will join her beloved husband at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery
in San Antonio, Texas at a Graveside Service Monday, April 3, 2006 at 2:00
PM. Pastor Ed Hogan of Jersey Village Baptist Church in Houston will
officiate.
Kathryn was a devoted Christian. She was a strong, independent lady and
lived a full and blessed life. She was always an honest, gentle, kind woman
who loved her family deeply. She was an especially devoted Mother,
Grandmother, Great-Grandmother (known affectionately to them all as "Granny
K" ) and dear friend to all that knew her. She will be missed, but always
remembered with love, especially at Christmas, one of her most favorite of
all holidays.
The family suggests memorials be made in honor of Kathryn L. Sherman to
Hospice Austin, 4107 Spicewood Springs Rd, Austin, Texas 78759 or, the
charity of your choice.
