Henry Boggan
WBT's `Hello Henry' Boggan dies
CHARLOTTE, NC - ( APRIL 20, 2006)
Henry Boggan, whose nighttime WBT radio talk show made him a friend to
listeners up and down the East Coast, died early today.
Officials at WBT, the 50,000-watt station where he worked for 17 years,
announced Boggan's death this morning. They said the 71-year-old Richmond
County NC native died of a heart attack he suffered at home.
Boggan worked at radio stations in Rockingham and Greensboro before coming
to Charlotte in 1979. He hosted the evening talk show at WBT until retiring
in 1996.
Boggan's guests included world-famous leaders, but his show, titled "Hello
Henry," was more like a front porch conversation among friends. Boggan had a
group of regular callers who kept listeners updated on the sometimes unusual
events in their lives.
He would greet first-time callers to his show with a honk that he said came
from his goose, "Queen Charlotte." Male callers were addressed as "pal," and
female callers -- regardless of their age -- were "young lady."
In a statement posted on WBT's Web site this morning, station General
Manager Rick Jackson said, "I never met a man that more personified the
ideas of a Southern gentleman. And I've never heard another radio man who
was better at connecting with his listeners."
When Boggan retired, he told listeners he had grown tired of working nights
and said he might be willing to return to the business one day. But he never
did, on a full-time basis. Boggan didn't walk away from the community,
however. He remained active in a number of charitable organizations and
efforts, and he emerged as a community leader in opposition to a referendum
several years ago to build an arena in Charlotte's uptown.
With WBT's 50,000-watt signal, the station's evening programs reach from
Canada to the Caribbean.
And in a story written before Boggan's retirement in 1996, Observer writer
Jim Morrill recounted a story told to him by former WBTV news anchor Moira
Quinn. She said she had been visiting the Caribbean in 1980 to report a
story on Grand Cayman Island for "PM Magazine," a one-time news magazine on
the station.
"Our taxi driver asked us where we were from," Quinn recalled, "and we said,
Charlotte, N.C. And he said, `Hel-lo-o-o, Henry! Oh, Henry is the biggest
thing in the Caymans. We listen to him at home.' "

I was sadened to read in the Charlotte.com on April 22, about the loss of
Mr. Henry Boggan. I too was a listener of "Hello Henry" on 110 WBT in the
late 70's and early 80's.
He didn't talk about anything special, like the talk
radio personalities of today.
His style of radio, was as if you were his friend. Heaven has gained a
"Southern Gentleman".
May God be with his family at this time.

Quite a few years ago when I came to this area and was spinning up and down
the dial I caught Henry. I thought, this is great radio this guy is
terrific. You see I'm in the business, have been for almost 40 years; I
remember how radio WAS...so did Henry. Finally got to meet him and he was
more real off the air than on. Rest well friend!

Jimi, We want you to know Henry was very special to the Brooks family. My
Mom and Dad, having lived next door to you for years, have given me and my
family the opportunity to know Henry well and will miss him very much. My
dad died 3 weeks ago and both of you were so loving and caring through our
ordeal. We are so glad that we had a chance to talk with you and Henry for a
while. You are in our prayers.

I worked with Henry in the mid 80's. He was a sweet soul. I will never
forget some of the "old sayings" he would repeat. For example: "If you need
money, stand outside under a full moon with an opened wallet and say, Moon,
moon, beautiful moon, fill her up, fill her up, fill her up." I'm not sure
it works. But it was a fun thought. Thanks for the memories my dear friend.
I'm smiling as I imagine all the people in heaven who must be saying, "Hello
Henry."

My dearest Henry, your genuine love for mankind, gentle spirit, kindness,
infectious laugh with such gusto that could only emanate from deep within a
man of great substance, will truly be missed. To your family, I say without
reservation, that it was indeed an honor and a pleasure to work with Henry
for 13 years at JPCC. Twenty years ago as I walked into the hallowed halls
of the great JPCC shaking in my boots, Henry made me feel right at home!
Yes, he's THE MAN! He never waivered, he stayed the course, his ideals,
integrity, beliefs and skills are worthy of aspiring young broadcasters to
follow. Henry's pet name for me was "Jewels". Well, now he's THE JEWEL in
God's country -Oh, Henry, how you'll sparkle on the streets of gold as you
meet once again those great BT broadcasters who have gone on before you!
Love you forever, Henry! See you on the other side!

I was a regular caller to "Hello Henry" in the 1980's. I also enjoyed
Henry's Big Band music program on Sunday nights. We at Mix 106 were grateful
that he was willing to get up early on Saturday mornings to help Ted Caudle
with "The Southern Lawn and Garden Line". Today (4-22-06)we played a
soundbite that featured Ted and Henry previewing the show for 4-22-01. We
also used a soundbite from 3-10-01. I was working across the hall for our AM
sister WHVN when Henry was on the show. Now I'm the producer/ engineer. I'll
miss talking to him about North Carolina Tarheels football! Henry and I had
some mutual friends from Rockingham: Calvin and Jean Burgess and John
Snowden.
My deepest sympathy goes out to the Boggan family. Mix 106 was richly
blessed to have him on our airwaves!

porch "buddy" Henry Boggan. I dearly miss you and cherish the time every

I undoubtedly owe Henry my life. As a young mother of two babies in the
early 80's I would leave work in Charlotte after 11 every night to drive
back to Concord. Sometimes I was almost to tired to walk to the car. Henry
kept me company on those long rides home...usually laughing, sometimes
crying...but Henry never let me fall asleep. Thank you Henry...the world is
a better place because you were in it.

special. Henry, you will be missed.

Henry Boggan - a true gentleman with a true heart. That's how I will forever
remember Henry. Even though I only spent a day with him, through a nice

I had the chance to see Henry again a few weeks ago at the Broadcasting Hall
of Fame ceremony in Chapel Hill. I also worked with Henry during my 14 years
at WBT, some as his news anchor and other times during Sunday Brunch. Henry
always tried to pin me down on the facts, because he knew his listeners
wanted them. I also knew that there was a gentility in the way he treated
all of us that worked with him and the listeners he so cherished as part of
his extended family.
It was good to see Henry last month as I sat there with H.A. Thompson, Mike
Collins, Rockin Ray, John Hancock and other close friends from WBT. We are
all a family... and we will miss one of our own. There are days in my work
when people talk tough and get angry... and I remember what Henry told me
often... and what he told another guest book entrant... "be nice." Thanks
Henry, for sharing part of yourself with all of us.

Oh sweet man ... our friend, our uncle ... you didn't say goodbye.
We'll never say goodbye. I wonder right now, will we ever laugh again? I
mean, really laugh, like we used to when you were telling the same old tired
jokes, that always brought tears of laughter down our faces, over and over
again ... the road trips ... the stories ... and yes, the ghost stories (you
had a lot of those), and we loved them all ... and you loved telling them
... the milkshakes ... the Christmas dinners ... the bubbling Christmas tree
lights ... and remember "no balloons, they're tacky" ... the fun ... the
wonderful way you could fill up a room, with your warm, wonderful voice ...
your great big laugh, and all the warmth and love anyone could ever hope for
... the stories of Granny and "Duke" and all the old days ... and yes, the
next time we get together, we WILL just sit and talk and visit and eat ...
the next time ... just like you said ... and until then, Dear "Hen" ...
"sleep warm, sleep well" ... we will miss you every day ... we love you,
Henry Boggan.
Now rest sweet uncle ... run and sing and laugh ... watch over us all.

A gentleman in every way, Henry Boggan reflected everything good about North
Carolina. He inspired many to achieve the the greater good in themselves. He
was a warm friend over the radio and companion to all of his listeners.
I had a neightbor, in Florida, who was a retired Army officer who used to
listen to Henry every night.
When he would drive back up north, once a year, He would go out of his way
to go by and see Henry. Each visit they would take a picture together and my
neightbor would display the pictures in his billiard room. Last count he had
eight starting in 1981.
He was just a regular listener, but Henry took the time, every time, to
visit at least for a few minutes. It's what made him special.
Today, our loss is heavens gain.
I can hear him saying to the angels "Hi Neighbor!"

I spent 23 years doing local radio at WSTP in Salisbury, and I can proudly
say that Henry was one of my strongest influences. Though I never met him
personally, I heard his first show on WBT in 1979 and many shows that
followed. His true gift was listening. And unlike many of today's hosts,
Henry displayed a warmth that was as comfortable as an old shoe. I miss that
warmth on the radio, and I will certainly miss Henry.

My first conversation with Henry was when he did the "Red Tag Sale" on
Saturday's mornings. Listening to him over the years on Hello Henry really
brightened my days. I had the opportunity to meet Henry several times and he
was truly a genuine person. On my 50th birthday, my husband and I were
eating in a local restaurant and sitting at the next table were three of my

Goodbye Henry - you'll be missed. Henry was the last of the true "talk show"
hosts who understood his role was to be a moderator. While he expressed his
opinion, he never made you feel as if your opinion wasn't important,

how great he truly was.
Rest in peace good friend.

Similar to Tommy Tomlinson's experience, I too used to listen to AM radio at
night growing up in Wilmington, NC. I had an old Magnavox tube type radio my
grandmother had given me from her beach house. Henry Boggan was one of my
favorites in the night time lineup, along with EG Marshall's CBS Radio
Mystery theater, and Cubs Games on WLS Chicago.
Henry's voice, especially over the old tube-type, was smooth and easygoing,
and easy to fall asleep to. I moved to Charlotte in 1988, and listened to
Henry quite a bit here as well. He had a big heart, patience to listen to
his guest callers, a deep love of people, America, and the South. He wanted
his callers and listeners to be the star, and I think he mostly wanted
people to recognize the goodness in each other, no matter where they came
from, what color they were, where they worshipped, or how they liked their
tomato sandwich.
We'll miss you Henry, and won't forget.

You are some of the best memories of growing up in Charlotte. So many times
I remember My father asking if I had listened to Henry yesterday. Why he
asked I do not know, He always new the answer. What I loved most about him
asking was the conversations with my father that would always follow. I feel
that is one of the reasons we are so close today. It was Henry. I lived
everyday thankful for people like Henry. I have missed you on the air but
will miss you more knowing I will not bump into you on the street. I will
miss you Henry! Thanks for the years.

I was a regular listener and caller to Hello Henry when I worked nights as a
manager for Hardee's. I won a large bag of Piedmont Popcorn on his program
for knowing about Smith Brothers Cough Drops. He also did a music show on
Sunday nights which featured Big Band music. We were fortunate to have Henry
as the original host for the Southern Lawn and Garden Line on Mix 106. He
and Ted Caudle had done programs at WBT. Our GM Tom Gentry felt the
chemistry that they had would create a popular program. It did! We were
grateful for the time and support Henry devoted to Mix 106. Sadly, radio
will never have another "Hello Henry"!!
I'll miss talking with him about North Carolina Tar Heels football.

I came to this country and to Charlotte in 1979 ans shortly after my
American husband made me listen and discover Henry Bogan. Even when I had a
hard time to understand every words of the listeners I learned so much about
this marvelous country, thanks to Henry. Later I was doing tax returns for a
wellknown tax company and Henry came to our office. I jumped to the
receptionist desk to get him as a customer. It was one of the most exciting
and memorable 0ne and a half hour of my life: funny, sweet, very refined,
great great man. I will miss him

After moving to NC from NJ at a young age leaving Grandma behind, it was
Henry who kept a link between the two of us. We would both listen to his
radio show and talk about it in an occasional phone call. She was endlessly
amazed his voice could carry so far, and could not help but imitate the
"hell-o-o-o" and southern accent. Grandma passed away long go, but Henry
gave me priceless, special memories I carry always. Thanks Henry, say

Henry always made me smile when I ran into him in the halls of WBT. My
favorite conversation of all time had to be when we compared and contrasted
the virtues of the two talking pig movies making the rounds of Charlotte's
cineplexes. I still laugh thinking about that. Henry was what I remember
radio being all about...connecting to the listeners to each other...not

In the 80's, I hosted a Sunday morning program, "Visions" on the FM (WBCY &
Sunny FM) just down the hall from WBT. After my shift ended, I would head
over to the WBT studios to sit with Henry & Mike Collins. What a chemistry
these guys had on air. Henry made you laugh and feel as though he was your
best friend. Henry just made you feel special. He was a Charlotte radio icon
and he'll be missed greatly.

I don't believe there ever has been, nor will there ever be, a person who
has an impact on the Charlotte area like Henry. I grew up listening to Henry

"hellooooo" yesterday. Thanks for the good memories you helped create,
Henry!

I never met Henry, but he helped me through some very dark evenings. I'll
never forget when Hurrican Hugo came through Charlotte and all I had for
entertainment on those many nights that the electric was off, was a small AM
radio. It was Henry's voice that offered comfort and advice. Henry's voice
that made you want to get up and keep going. Thanks Henry, you will be
missed.

Henry Boggan meant an awful lot to me. I moved to Charlotte in 1982, and
quickly found WBT on the dial. I loved listening to Henry at night, talking
about anything and everything, but with never an unkind word for anyone. His
audience was black, white, Yankee, Southern (and Floridians, too). It was
the great melting pot of the East Coast, and Henry lead the band with
kindness and humor. His type of radio is long gone, and I have long missed
it.

I came to Charlotte in 1981 but knew a lot about our city from listening to
Henry on WBT every night from Florida. After I got here I called Henry even
though I worked for the competition WSOC-AM 93 on the air in the afternoon.
Henry couldn't have been nicer and he even went as far as plugging my show
on WSOC. The man was fearless and the best friend the Charlotte Chamber of
Commerce ever had.
Later I came to work at WBT first doing overnights and later weekends and
vacation fill. Following Henry at night on WBT was a joy. The atmosphere in
the studio each night was a party always a lot of fun.
I remember taking a trip to NYC and while at the top of the Empire State
Building I tuned my Walkman to 1110 WBT and there was Henry on the air at
home. He touched so many with a sense of class and fun.

I never remember Henry being "political", which seems to be the only thing
talk radio knows anymore. Henry was great, and he made all he talked to feel
welcomed into the studio, even over the phone. I'm afraid there may never be
anyone else like him on radio again. I always recognize 2 voices on the
radio or television: Casey Kasem, and Henry Boggan. Godspeed Henry.

This man made a tremendous impact on me as a child. He and Tom Dezio were
truly a joy, in a time when radio talk was in fact "talk," not mindless
banter and screaming. Henry, my friend, you will be missed.

Hello Uncle Henry! I'm Henry's great-niece. I will always treasure each and
every moment I was able to spend with him. Holidays were always extra happy
times because of Henry. One of the highlights of Christmas, was to ride
through Charlotte and look at as many Christmas lights as possible. Henry
also made sure every child in our family received huge bags of toys at
Christmas. I loved to sit next to Henry and listen to his stories. What a
character! He could always bring a smile to my face. Henry seemed to spread
happiness and joy to everyone he encountered. I'm so thankful I was able to
visit with Henry around the end of March. I gave him a hug, kissed him on
the forehead and told him I love him. I miss you Henry. I'm so proud of you.
Thanks for being such a terrific uncle and friend!

Henry taught us many lessons on humanity. One of the things I remember is
Henry saying, "You have to be INTERESTED to be INTERESTING. Henry was both.
He knew how to live life to the fullest. He was an extremely intelligent
man, able to speak knowledgeably on any subject. He had a talent of drawing
the listener in, and welcoming audience partipation at the same time. He was
one of us, not just a voice over the airwaves.
We love you and will miss you Henry. Good-bye and "keep warm and safe".

I met Henry when I married his great-niece. I was too young, I guess, to
enjoy his radio shows, but I did have the joy and privilege to be with him

his stories. He always made the day make more sense once you were with him.
He was an incredible man, he will be missed.

I was lucky enough to fill in for Wendell on occasion and that time in the
studio with Henry has always been one of my favorite memories of WBT. He
truly was the last of the ?ld school? I was a kid just out of Myers Park
High, and he really didn? have to give me the time of day?ut he did. He
always did, for all of us. On a personal level I was given the gift of
seeing a real pro in action and I will always be grateful for that. It gave
me a perspective on the business that many in my generation don? have. For
all of you out there, just know that Henry really was THAT guy you? listen
to. He was such a nice man. We?e all tuned in on the drive home, up and down
the east coast, to sitting around the radio in the dark during Hugo. It?
kind of like the cheers song?enry knew your name. It amazed me that before
the age of phone screeners and computerized studios, most of the time, after
a call or two, Henry could tell who you were just by your hello. Helloooo
Henry that is. Thank you Henry Boggan. Sleep warm, sleep well.

I remember listening to Henry in the aftermath of Hurricane Hugo. Like many,
I was without electricity for about a week, and listened to the radio

as it surely did for many others. He probably never knew how many people he
helped by just being there.

I don't have the words to express how much sunshine you have brought into
people's lives during your journey called life. You defined the word
"friend" in all the ways that Webster's can't. You gave laughter,
encouragement, and hope to people that got them through the day. Everytime I
hear the words,"Hello Henry" I will be reminded of a man that made a
difference in the journey.

I love Henry as much for who he influenced as for who he was. Today, Nancy
Haynes gave me the news through tears of shock and sorrow having just
learned she had lost her good friend. I called Mike Collins who had vital
information and he generously helped us get that information to our
listeners. Mike is one of the best men I know and he's always been selfless
and helpful to everyone who has needed him. Robert Boyd (yes, he's Ty boyd's
son and is a top-flight salesman at WBT) suggested we fly the company flag
at half-mast in his honor and of course, that was a terrific suggestion.
John Hancock, who understands he carries the very bright torch that Henry
has given him, immediately began to coordinate the guests and the archive
material for a tribute to our fallen friend. John carries that torch with a
great sense of loyalty to Henry and his listeners and you know it will be
wonderful radio. Hundreds of calls and emails have poured into the radio
station since the news was released and it's been a pleasure to hear the
glowing remarks from those who were lucky enough to hear one of the great
radio professionals of our time.
There's an old line that goes, "It's not what you take with you when you
leave, it's what you leave behind you when you're gone."
Henry, all you need to do is look at all that has happened since you left us
less than 8 hours ago to see that you left a lot of love in the hearts of
the people you touched in your life. We'll never be the same for it and you
can take that with you.

I got to know Henry by sheer accident. Back in the mid 80s while attending
classes at Central Piedmont Community College at the beginning of the
quarters the classes were full. Doing this time it would take a long time to
get off the parking deck and FM radio couldn't be picked up. While
attempting to find something to listen to while waiting I turned over to the
AM dial and discovered Henry. I continued to listen to him for years after
even when FM was available. During times when we have to deal with rude
people it certainly is a joy to know that people like Henry exist.

As a young kid interested in being in radio, I listened to Henry over the
static on WBT in the early 1990s. I called in on the show a few times and
wrote him a letter, asking for advice about being a broadcaster.
Henry called me at home one night before his show. He was eating dinner, but
took the time to give me some advice and pal around on the phone. It was a
wonderful conversation.
I called Henry's show now and then, and he remembered me each time, asking
how I had been and how my journey into broadcasting was going.
That Henry Boggan was a great broadcaster is obvious. Everyone who listened
to him knows that. And I was fortunate to learn first-hand that Henry was a
true gentleman.

Henry, your personality and on-air presentation was one to which all

Henry was a voice of gentility and friendliness to me when I was much
younger. I knew that I could tune in every night and hear his friendly,
folksy, gentle voice. Though he could be firm with callers, Henry never
failed to make friends and family out of everyone who called. My boys who
were small at the time loved his goose Queen Charlotte. When I was still in
the hospital after having one of my children I tuned in to hear his familiar
beloved voice. Listening to him reminisce about days gone by, I felt like I
was a part of whatever he was talking about. Dick Frymier, the almanac man,
became of my favorite guests on Henry's show. I loved Henry of Belmont who
our Henry always picked at and teased. He kept alive the neigborliness and
friendliness that the very best of Southerners still have. I grew to love
Tom Desio who was so much a part of Henry's "air" life. I loved the man.

Worked in local radio for 20 years and was a guest on Henry's show several

broadcasts should be listened to by young people interested in broadcasting
on how to connect with a viewer or listener. He could draw out the best of
every guest and was a wealth of knowledge on almost every subject. Local
radio was poorer when he retired. I'll miss him.

Even though I never met him in person, Henry is one of the three people I
really credit with instilling in me a love of good and entertaining radio. I
used to listen to him as a teenager growing up in Charleston, SC -- and I
called him as a teen on several occasions to talk about a variety of
things -- some serious...some not so serious. But, you could tell he valued
my opinion and my listenership at 15 as much as he would had I been 45!
I used to love the way he always ended his show with that big band tune and
those few special closing words...which apply here....
"Sleep warm! Sleep well!"

I worked at One Julian Price Place for eleven years. I was in television,
but I made a point to walk the radio halls because there were so many
interesting conversations just waiting to be had in that part of the
building. Henry always spoke to you in the halls. When he asked about your
day, he cared about your answer.
I saw him sad several times--- worried about a friend, our company, the
world---but mostly Henry was the kindest, most caring, most generous of
persons. He loved radio with every fiber of his being and it showed in his
shows and the loyalty of his fans. And he gave great hugs.

Henry Boggan displayed characteristics sorely lacking on too much of today's

When Henry came to Charlotte in 1979, he moved in beside my parents. As nice
as he was on the radio, he was even nicer in person. Henry became a close
friend of our family. He always had something nice to say to us when we
visited home. My Father and Henry were extremely close and would call each
other every day to poke fun at each other. My Dad died this year on April 1
and Henry was there for us. While Dad was sick, my wife and I stayed at home
to take care of him. After he died, I would go visit with Henry and Jimi and
he told me that he would pick up the phone to call Dad several times a day
and then remember he was no longer there. He really loved my Dad and we
really love you Henry. I know you and Dad are right back to your old ways

When I first came to Charlotte in 1991 from Ct, I was used to the harshness
and faster pace of NY talk radio hosts. I have to admit it was an adjustment
to listen to Henry. He and his callers talked about everything from world

hominess of his show and the caring he showed for his listeners. Thanks,
