Juanita Munoz Kraus
Juanita Virgina Munôz Kraus, 92, of Lake Charles LA died at 2:30 AM Monday,
March 27, 2006 in her home.
Mrs. Kraus was born in Hardy, AR. Her parents were Juan Martin Munôz and
Virginia Thompson Munôz. She was a direct descendant of the first Governor
of Louisiana, Leonardo deGalvez. Reared in St. Louis, she attended and
graduated from Mary Institute. Later she completed a degree in Education
from Washington University. In St. Louis, she met and married her college
sweetheart, and the love of her life, Bill. They were lovingly married for
63 years until Bill's death in 1996.
During the 54 years, she lived in Lake Charles, she completed her Master's
Degree in Reading Education at McNeese State University. She was the first
teacher of orthopedic handicapped children based at Hamilton Elementary. She
also taught in the first Headstart program in Lake Charles. Mrs. Kraus was a
charter member of the Lioness Club, holding various offices and working as a
volunteer on projects fro the League of Crippled Children. She was a member
of Delta Kappa Gamma, an honorary education fraternity. She retired from
teaching in Calcasieu Parish after 32 years in kindergarten and first grade.
She also was a member of the Calcasieu Chapter DAR and served as president
of CAR. Mrs. Kraus was a member of Our Lady of Queen of Heaven Catholic
Church and served the Alter Society and as a volunteer for the Family Life
Community Center.
She is lovingly survived by her daughter, Susan Gorham and her husband
Thomas of Lake Charles; her son, Bill Kraus and wife Patsy of LaJolla, CA;
seven grandchildren, Steven Gray of Fort Worth, TX, Karen Breslauer of Oak
Harbor, MD, Kevin Kraus of Parker, CO, Kyle Kraus of San Diego, CA, Julie
Dyerk of Lake Charles, Kathryn Gorham of Lake Charles and Josh Gorham of
Lake Charles, currently stationed in Iraq; twelve great grandchildren and
one great-great grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill Kraus, one daughter, Julie
Kraus Gray and one brother, Martin Munôz.
Funeral services will be Thursday, March 30, 2006 at 10:00AM in Our Lady
Queen of Heaven Catholic Church. Father T.L. Herlong will officiate. Burial
will be in Consolata Cemetery under the direction of Johnson Funeral Home.
Visitation Wednesday will be from 3:00 until 8:00 PM with a scripture
service and rosary beginning at 6:00 PM. Visitation Thursday will continue
at 8:00 until 9:45 AM in the funeral home.
