William Alexander "Bill" Harbison, Jr., 95 of Grace Ridge Retirement Center,
Morganton, NC died Wednesday, June 2, 2004 following a period of declining
health.
He was born in Burke Co., NC on Feb. 1, 1909 and was the son of the late
William A. Harbison, Sr. and May Davis Harbison.
He served in the US Army with the 120th General Hospital Medic Corps in New
Guinea and the Philippines during World War II. His paternal grandfather
served in the Confederate Army and his maternal grandfather served in the NC
House and Senate. Mr. Harbison owned his won photography shop and retired
from the Morganton Insurance Agency. Bill was active in civic organizations
and served on the Morganton City Council, Draft Board, was a former
commander of American Legion Post 21 where he was instrumental in
establishing the American Legion baseball team, and was life long member of
First United Methodist Church. He was a devoted family man, the family
"letter writer", and will be remembered as a gentle man with kind thoughts
and a good sense of humor.
He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Bleecker Malone Harbison. Surviving
in addition to his wife are their children and their spouses William A. and
Margaret Habison III of Charlotte; Patricia and Donald M. Oglesby of
Virginia Beach, VA and Leila and Eugene Hileman of Tahlequah, OK. Harbison
grandchildren are Elizabeth Gunter and Her husband Jay of Raleigh and Andrea
McGuire of Boone. The Oglesby grandchildren are Elizabeth Crenshaw and her
husband, Stan and Richard Oglesby and his wife, Monica, all of Virginia
Beach, VA. The Hileman grandchildren are William Hileman and his wife, Diane
of Atlanta, GA. Leila Cordona and her husband, Robert of San Antonia, TX,
and Robert Hileman of Little Rock, AR. Also surviving are great
grandchildren, Mae Gunter, Maddie McGuire, Rachel Crenshaw, Ariel Oglesby,
Mac Cardona, Carl Hileman and Sydney Hileman.
The funeral will be held at 11:00 a.m. Sunday June 6, 2004 in the Community
Room at Grace Ridge with the Rev. Sheldon Stephenson officiating.
The family will receive friend immediately following the service.
Sossoman Funeral Home is assisting.
