Beatrice Marie (Barde) Shaver passed away Wednesday, November 12, 2003, in
San Antonio, at the age of 74, from incurable brain cancer.
She was born October 9, 1929, in Washington, DC. Bee (as known by her family
and friends) was the daughter of Elmer and Beatrice Barde, who preceded her
in death.
Her father was a career Marine Corps officer, who moved several times during
Bee?Ts childhood years.
On December 18, 1949, she married Joe Meredith Shaver, in Nashville, TN, who
survives her. She is also survived by a brother, Col. Robert E. Barde USMC
(Ret.) of Mt. Dora, FL; a daughter, Cynthia Hopkins of Bloomfield Hills, MI;
a daughter, Susan Johnson of Bear, DE; and a son, Neal, of San Antonio. She
is also survived by seven grandchildren who were ?othe apple of her eye.?
Megan, Michael, Malinda, Christopher, Alexander, Peter and Rachel;; and two
nephews, Robert and Christopher.
She was graduated from Christian College in Columbia, MO, with an Associates
Degree in Music, from Vanderbilt University, in Nashville, TN, with a
Bachelor?Ts degree in Choral Directing, and from city College of New York,
in New York City, with a Master?Ts degree in Adult Education. Bee also had
college credits from Harding University, Arkansas State University,
Bridgeport University, and New York University.
She and her family resided in Aruba, Dutch Caribbean, for 13 years, and in
White Plains, NY for 23 years, before moving to San Antonio in 1985.
She taught clerical skills to disadvantaged adults for 20 years in White
Plains, and during the evenings taught English as a second language for
several years to adults in Queens, NY. At the same time she served as
Trustee to a mentally handicapped woman in Forrest Hills, NY.
Since moving to San Antonio, she has consistently taught Bridge classes for
the NEISD, and the Incarnate Word Retirement Community.
Bee was an accomplished musician, and had the same seat at the Symphony for
the last 15 years. In addition, she was an excellent seamstress, and an avid
gardener. Be loved to entertain in her home, and it was always with a
?oguest friendly? atmosphere. On many occasions, she opened her home from
a week to several months to missionaries and others who were ?oin
transit?.
Since moving to San Antonio, she was an active member of the Northside
Church of Christ, where her husband is an Elder. There she taught
periodically the Women?Ts Bible Classes, and she and her husband conducted
on two occasions a seminar on Marriage Enrichment. Bee also sent birthday
and anniversary cards to each of the 600 adult members each year. She also
served on the Board of the Northside Foundation, and for two years was its
President.
Bee was also a member of the Advisory Board of the Austin Graduate School of
Theology for the last ten years.
Her husband is an Elder at the church, and pallbearers will be the other
eight Elders of the Northside Church.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Disability Resources,
P.O. Box 1880, Abilene, TX 79604, the Northside Building Fund or a charity
of your choice.
