Mystic, CT - Grace "Lib" Elizabeth MacDonnell, recently of Mystic and a long time Darien, Conn. and Stuart, Fla. resident, passed away unexpectedly, Sunday, March 1, 2009, at Westerly Hospital in Westerly, R.I.

Born Feb. 16, 1924 in Hamburg, N.Y., Lib was the daughter of the late James and Anna Robinson. She attended the University at Buffalo where she excelled in music and was offered a piano scholarship to The Julliard School.

She met the love of her life, Russ, on a blind date when he was on leave as a pilot from the U.S. Army Air Corps. They married in 1946, and settled in Darien to raise three children, Russ, Robin and Kyle.

In 1970, Lib joined her husband in founding Sonitrol Security Systems, Inc. in Stamford, Conn. which they operated until 1984.

Following the sale of their business in 1984, Lib and Russ traveled extensively and particularly enjoyed piloting their beloved boat "Glengarry" between Connecticut, Florida, and the many Caribbean Islands that they visited.

Lib continued her love for music playing the piano and church bells for the choir at Mariner Sands Chapel in Stuart, Fla. where the couple had moved. She also continued her passion for entertaining and cooking frequently indulging friends, family and church members in need with her culinary skills.

Lib was a smart, lively, fun, talented, energetic woman who enjoyed every day of her life's journey. She loved being a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and homemaker and it showed.

She is survived by her three children, Russell R. MacDonnell of Norwalk, Kyle E. MacDonnell of Fairfield and Stonington and Robin A. Shaw of St. Louis, Mo.; ten grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren with two more on the way, one of whom will be named for her.

Her husband of 49 years passed away in 1995.

A memorial service celebrating her life will be held at 12 noon on Saturday, March 7, 2009, at the Calvary Church, 27 Church St., Stonington. There are no calling hours. Burial will be private. The Mystic Funeral Home, Mystic, has charge of arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Calvary Church Music School, 27 Church St., Stonington, CT 06378. The MacDonnell Family invites you to visit www.mysticfuneralhome.com for the online guest book.
