Subject: [WORLDWAR2] Looking for Branch of Service - William E. Conrad
Date: Mon, 22 Mar 2010 22:35:34 -0400
Barbara, the information previously posted appears to have come from his Record started at the Induction Center. The first digit , #3 of his Army Serial Number (ASN), indicates that he was drafted. The second digit, #5, indicates that this occurred in the Fifth Service Command of the Second Army Area located at Fort (Ft) Hayes, OH and covered that States of OH, WV, IN and KY. Since he was not yet assigned to a Unit for training, his Branch of Service (BOS) had not been assigned. BOS would be Infantry (Inf), Artillery (Arty) Quartermaster (QM) etc. The Center is indicating that, based on his civilian experience/training, it did not make any difference to which BOS he was assigned. There, "Branch Immaterial". He could also be considered for the Grade of Warrant Officer (WO) which carries a Warrant rather than a Commission received by a Second Lieutenant (2nd Lt) or above. Likewise, USA (United States Army) refers to "Component" and was used for Regular Army (RA) Personnel as apposed to draftees who were AUS (Army of United States). AUS was permanent unless at a time when eligible for Discharge, the individual decided to enlist and continue in Service. When "Date of Enlistment" is used, it means the date the individual entered the Service and was used for both enlistees and draftees. Feel free to write me direct if you have questions.
