The following instructions are for Netscape 3.0 or higher. Other
browsers will use similar settings, but I don't know how to set them -
probably Options or Preferences.

For Netscape:

Select Options from the menu bar, then Mail & News Preferences. Then
select the Servers tab. At the bottom, there is a block labelled News.
The first field must contain something like:
news.csinet.net
where csinet.net is the name of your Internet Service Provider (ISP) -
your service provider can tell you exactly what it should be. The
setting for ATT Worldnet (mine) is:
netnews.worldnet.att.net

The second field should already be filled in by Netscape with something
like:
C:\Netscape\Navigator\News

The third field determines how many messages Netscape will access at a
time. You can set this to whatever you like. I have mine set at 500.
Once these three fields are set, select OK at the bottom.

NOW...to actually see and post to the newsgroups:

Select Window from the menu bar, then select Netscape News. On the
left, there should be a window labelled News Server. There may or may
not be a folder shown labelled news.csinet.net. If it's there, fine, if
not then select file from the menu bar, then select Open News Host.
Fill in news.digital.net and click OK. The folder should appear. Click
on the the + next to the folder to open it. There should be some
default newsgroups listed that provide basic information on newsgroups.
Next, select File, then select Add Newsgroup. Fill in the name
soc.genealogy.medieval and click OK. This name should now appear in the
folder. Select it. Messages should start appearing in the right hand
window. When Netscape is done listing the messages, you can start
reading them if you like.

This is kind of a snooty newsgroup - some very professional contributers
who expect thorough documentation (some of them are real a**holes about
it).

To post a message to the group, click on the button "To: News". This
will bring up a message window for you to fill in. Write your message
and click Send.

There are some other newsgroups you might want to try in addition to
soc.genealogy.medieval:

soc.genealogy.surnames
alt.genealogy

There are also some ethnic ones like:

soc.genealogy.italian
soc.genealogy.slavic

etc....

Add these the same way you did for soc.genealogy.medieval

Happy hunting,

Bobby
