Thanks Daphne,
I have received all three of his children's d/certificates...
1. lists father as ?Berry,
2. lists father as Lumpkin Berry, b. GA
3. lists father as George Berry, b. NY

:) These children never
knew their father and I'm assuming that the informants were making guesses.
I've checked Lumpkin County, GA in case someone just was remembering the word
Lumpkin from the past...but nothing. I started to think last night that maybe
Mary married prior to my MR. Berry/man and that's why I find no record of a
Forbes m. a Berry (except one Mary Forbis and JL Berryman). Maybe her last
name was different due to marriage. I saw yesterday that she was gone from
her parents home at the age of 20---where ? I haven't been able to locate as
of yet. The first child born to Forbes and Berry/man was my gggrandfather
George Jackson Berry in 1878. That would have made Mary 28, at least,
depending upon which census you use. Isn't that old for a first child or
marriage? Or was it typical for that time period in GA because of the
shortage of young men due to the Civil War? I will try the other counties
nearby. They were in a small town, Homer. Thanks. Any other suggestions would
be wonderful.
Christine
