<<I believe the "problem" with this list is......the responses to questions
aren't posted to the list as a whole. A question is asked and the
responses go ONLY to the person posting the question. >>
Is this true? As a matter of fact, I am subscribed to several geneology
lists. I find I don't pay attention to this one, because I never get
anything useful from it. The responses to questions posed are practically
non-exixtent, and though many questions intrigue me, I await the responses
and tne air is dead. It HAS seemed as thogh only questions are posed, and I
have assumed that no one cares to respond. Consequently, I don't see this
list as a resource. I would posit the Dutch colonies list as an example of
a helpful, rich, and insightful exchange of information, and one which is
well moderated and extremely focused, despite its tremendous size. The list
owners and many of the experienced researchers are careful to be certain
list postings stay focused on dutch community issues and geneology, whereas
they would agree that the Roots announcement issue is better discussed in
other forums and they even don't like to have us repeat discussions
addressed in the past (referring the newcomeer with a repeat question to
the archives so as to not clog the fast and furious exchange of new
information) but we converse in that forum to benefit of the group from the
multi-dialogue.. I can find individuals to email privately from the query
bullitin boards. Even there, we all hope someone will post the answers for
all attending the board to see, not just exchange their information
privately. Unless this list begins to make the geneological data we all
have, shareable to the group, I see no reason to be a part of the group.
I am researching the Weidknechts, who came from NJ around 1745 or so from
New Jersey. The son of Johannes Weidknecht, Hendrick, became Henry Whitnack
or Whitenack or Whitnach in Wheeling WV. Our family is found in the various
Berkley county Censuses and in community and court and church records of
the area through the 1700 and 1800's. Whitenack is the common name by which
most can research this family in this area at this time. They married Burns
and Van Metres, who also came into the area from NJ - and they knew them
there, however, eariler. Hendrick was profiled in a history of the early
pioneers of Wheeling WV, and I am most interested in finding locations of
their homesteads in Berkley, and local history and information. Does
anyone have Lutheren or Methodist church records, baptismal records, or
marriage records? If so, I can post my names.
I'd like to do this for the benefit of the whole list. Perhaps a daughter
or marriage surname I post or someone responds with will spark a conneciton
to who knows who! I will gather my info and post this data tomorrow.
Cheers!
