I am also curious about this. My CRONISTER ancestors lived in Gerardstown,
Mill Creek, Darkesville in the 1860-1870s. Sometime around 1873 they
decided to pack it up and head west. They wound up in a small town outside
of Springfield, IL called Athens. Looking at the map, it looks like they
headed straight west. I am sure the Civil War had an impact on their
decision to move, but I find myself wondering what their life was like
during that time.
